Thanks for asking. It was a process, not an event. And, there was no specific date or reason. It was the result of evaluating the evidence:

I remember the exact moment, 12:30 am Dec. 25th 1965. For three years prior to that I became a church going agnostic while searching for the truth. It was at that moment that I realized that religion didn't offer truth, just contrived answers and that the search for truth was the correct path, whether those truths were eventually revealed or not. I came to realize that In as much as I was not around to see how everything came into being (and neither were you),I say, "I don't know ..... YET!" To assume that some god, my less than intellectual ancestors made up, instantaneously excreted the universe into being, is absurd

I didn't become an atheist. I was born an atheist. Being an atheist simply means that you don't believe in a deity, and no human is born believing that there is. This concept is inserted by force, coercion, trauma, threats, and other brainwashing techniques. I remained an atheist, because my parents did not try to force me to accept the prevailing religion of the culture I grew up in.

No, not exactly. I was raised Catholic, but never really bought into the dogma, not even as a child; and I stopped going to church as soon as I moved out of my parents' house. Since I didn't actually think about it until I was in my mid-thirties, I would have to say that I recognized my atheism about ten years ago. Can't recall the date, but I do remember that I laughed, chided myself for not figuring it out earlier, and poured myself a drink to celebrate.
As for the "why" part, it's partly because the whole notion of god is so far-fetched and partly because the history of religion is so -- well, irreligious, to put it mildly.

Growing up a Lutheran, I was being forced by my parents to be confirmed and had to take classes for like 3 months to learn stuff about the bible. Many places it made no sense and when I questioned the pastor about it, he gave roundabout answers much like many of the Christians on here. I decided that my thoughts were more accurate and logical than the schlock being set in front of me, so I decided to live my life for myself.

When I became educated in science. So called supernatural powers are nothing more than psychobabble. Most bible thumpers are too stupid to even realize their "holey bible" contains 1,000's of factual self-contradictions and false prophecies. A rudimentary examination will easily expose these fables and falsehoods. Dare to challenge your beliefs - the truth shall set you free! ;-)

When they were treated like a statistic by churches; another big one is when they're raised in church and given a bunch of rules, but are never allowed to question why the rules are there. Then there are the others who never had much to do with church, and just chose it because that's what they were taught.

Let's see....oh, yes. An Acid trip did it for me. Certainly an eye opener....but it didn't stop with the god thing, it spilled over into the "minister" thing, sucking people dry of their money, selling escape from death (Life ever lasting, etc.), and then into the church power thing, well, it still is spilling out today...I catch myself answering questions like this....
