Of late, the monument has been reduced to a picnic place _***_fun tourist spot.

Should a code of conduct be observed by the visitors while in the building and should the number of visitors that can enter the building at a time be fixed to 10 to 12?

Or am I being too touchy?

There is a code of conduct and it is strictly observed. The tomb itself is not and was never intended to be a holy place. It was a showcase made by a Emperor of dubious sanity ( his son locked him up and deposed him when he started to think about building a black Taj Mahal to match it ).

Islam prohibits the veneration of the dead and frowns upon any such displays, so what goes on in the tomb and surrounding areas is not of major concern to anyones sensibilites. The Mosque at the Taj, however, IS holy and there are very strict rules observed. You can only go in if you are muslim with the express intention of prayer, not sight seeing.

Too touchy I'd say. First the Taj Mahal isn't only a tomb, it was built in celebration of the emporers wife. On top of that it has been turned into a national monument/ highly publicitized tourist trap. If the people of India dont mind, neither should we.

I agree with the rules of conduct you suggest. I think such rules of conduct should be in every place of worship and heritage in India. I also think that if such rules were enforced fewer of these places would be targets for graffiti and treated like trash bins for those who care too little about their own heritage.

Why do I say this? Because it was not the "foreign" tourists I saw throwing their trash on the streets while visiting places like Jaipur, Manali, and New Delhi. In fact, many times I, a "foreigner," seemed to be the only person who purposefully put her trash in her purse or bag if no trash can was near, while hundreds of other natives of India simply tossed their trash on the streets or lawns of public places.

If Indians want others to appreciate their wonderful culture and heritage, then shouldn't they appreciate it first?

There are many tombs which once created as beautiful places to visit have attracted visitors.
Some people remember why the place was built and honor it accordingly; others don't.
You can't rule human conduct. Heck, some people go to the graveyard for picnics...

I think you should be every bit as respectful as you would be at any other tomb/monument, like cathedrals, Arlington National Cemetary, etc.

Did you see people actually picnicing? What did they have?
