I would buy a 1998 Expedition and deck it out... rims, roll bars 4 wheel drive upgrades, shocks, struts, skid plates, brush guards...
why buy new when it can't off road anyway.... any thing from the dealerhsip[ is going to need extensive work before you take it off roading for real, not in the grass... but for real...
I got my Expy for 6k 1998, leather 2 cd changers, 4X4, DVD, seats 8 fat guys... runs like a dream... engine can scream, it looks mean... and it makes the girls cream... wanna bet I get reamed? for this comment?

Probably a Jeep Wranger - it's just about the only SUV left that actually has any off-road capability left. It's cheap and sluggish with the 4-cylinder, or peppey and affordable with the straight 6. The 4-Runner, Explorer, Expedition, Pilot, etc. are all watered-down vehicles that are good on the road, but I would not take them off-road (I'm talking about new models; previous models of these may have been decent off-roaders). Rav-4's and the like are completely out of their league on anything rough.
I wonder who buys these things - they're more closely related to tall station wagons now than real SUV's - why bother with the SUV-like gas mileage then?

If you want dependability and off road and fuel mileage and good power and good off road clearance then I think that the only choice is the Jeep wrangler or the jeep liberty they both get right around 20 miles to the gallon and the jeep liberty has a Mercedes drive train very dependable.

I'm not sure Pilot or 4Runner fall into your price range but I know Ford Escape does..especially when you can finance @ 0% interest for 60 mo. And get $1000 rebate/gas card. .......WHEN IS RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!1

I think a Honda Pilot would be good, not sure, but you should be able to get many good SUV's for $25K.
