I went through this when i was a teen. You need to realize that sucking their fingers really REALLY screws up a kids teeth. They can develop a cross-bite. Cross bites mess up the alignment of your face and makes it assymetrical. It makes your top jaw narrower than your bottom jaw and the only way to correct this is with a painful device: The rapid palatal expander. It literally pushes your top jaw apart to widen it. Sometimes that is not enough and it takes a surgery to break your top jaw to widen it. If a cross bite is not treated you'll have pain in your teeth and have a hard time chewing, and it will lower their self esteem..
Now if you dont want this to happen to you or whoever you're asking for. Tell them what could happen. Maybe it'll be an eye-opener. It is the ultimate lesson in self control. I only wish my mother did more to stop me, and now i am unhappy with myself.
If all else fails you can get a palatal arch installed. It sits on the roof of your mouth and makes the thumb sucking unpleasant. I wish my mother got one for me when i was little, but its too late for me now.

Try showing them all the germs that's under there nails and on there fingers. Some graphic pictures!!! I work in a Juvenile Detention Center and I see that all the time. It's just nasty!!!! Tell them how people pick boogers and then touch stuff in public and then they come along and touch the same thing so actually they are eating other peoples booger germs!!!! UUUHHHHHHHHH! I just made myself sick.............I didn't mean anything by the Juvenile Detention Center statement, I was just saying that's were I work...

this may not sound like the best advice. especially when it comes to self esteem. but with a teenager the one thing that can affect what they do most is their peers. tell your teen that if they don't get out of the habit you will start mentioning it in front of their friends. and follow threw. they will hate you for it but it will stop. you ask for a way to stop them from sucking their finger. at this age there is no way you are going to stop it without it having to be drastic.
