I left Colorado to move to Tunisia 5 years ago.
I enjoy Tunisia so much I cannot even begin to express in words how happy I am and how much I enjoy my new country. It is truly everything I was looking for and more. It's a wonderful place to raise kids, it's safe, the people are friendly, it has a very tinsy tiny crime rate, beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches, beutiful mountains. It is rich with history and culture. It's a dream come true.
I come home once a year to visit my parents, but that's only because my mom has health problems that prevent her from taking a long distance trip. If my parents were able to visit me, then I wouldn't have need to come back to the US.

I try not to tie happiness to location. Some locations are more pleasant than others based on personal experiences and personality. I have parents from two countries, born in a third and have all three citizenships - yes it's legal. I grew up traveling with my folks on assignments from Europe, to Asia, to South America, to North America, to Caribbean, to.. etc.. As an adult I eventually gravitated to a field that that involves heavy travel. I live in the Caribbean (at least pay rent there), I work in Africa (1 month rotation) and I travel to as many countries as I can in my time off. I've found myself being happy and unhappy based on where I was with myself inside, not outside.
Tax benefits can be appealling depending on your home country and any agreements with the country you'd like to migrate to .

Im British, I have lived in France, Spain, South Africa and Kenya, the only place I would never go back to is the UK, so I guess you could say I'm happy. At the moment I live in Spain, and yes I have found what I was looking for.

I like being away from my home country. Somehow, my being away from home makes me appreciate my own strengths and weaknesses. Somehow, it makes me adapt to changes relatively well. Somehow, it makes a bigger and better person. I still dream of going home but only for vacations now. I want to be able to work abroad always. I just love learning about new people and new things all the time.

I left the United States for the Philippines back in 2002 with my retired/teminally ill mother, akc registered Labador retriver and my Philippine wife. I am retired US Navy at paygrade E-7 with 23 years of service. My former state of legal residence was New Jersey. Did I find what I was looking for ? Absolutely ! Would I ever consider going back home ? I would rather you shoot me !
Sounds strong I know, but I have absolutely no intentions of ever returning to the states. The only thing I miss is some of the foods and now they are importing more and more varieties of american food for us expats retired and living here.
Before you sterotype me into some "crusty old fart sailor" married to some teenie wristwatch let me tell you who and what I really am.
I am 45 years old and my wife of the past 5 years is 38. We did not meet at a bar or through some internet dating service or chat room. We met the "old fashoned way" through mutual friends and went on a blind date together. Were mutually attracted and married a short 7 months later. It would have been sooner but getting married in Japan had a unique set of problems that had to be dealt with with all the government's ( US and Japans) red tape.
I have traveled the world many times and it would be easier for me to name the places that I have not been. It's not a brag, it's a fact.
I had been married 2x before to American women and both ended very badly, leaving me less than penniless with destroyed credit. Total time married was 12 years. 11 yrs to the first one and less than a year to the second one.
Anyway a Navy pension for an Enlisted man is not enough to survive in my home state. I was working 70 plus ahours a week on straight time at a menial job doing repairs to spas and pools. Why ? Because at 41 years old nobody wants you, and they are only willing to pay minimum wage straight time (illegal) take it or leave it. Nevermind the fact that a trained pool technichian is billed to the customer at $65 per hour. All your getting is $6,50 or walk. My military experiance was classified and with no civillian work experiance the employers treated me like they were "doing me a favor" just to hire me. There goes my self esteem having 50 plus people working for me and literally millions of dollars worth of equipment in my charge. Face it guys, if you job is not civillian related, your trash to the civillian world. So much for the pipedream of dedicating you life to God and Country. Your Country does not care about you after you leave active duty and will fight tooth and nail not to give you the veterins benefits you earned. I am still fighting now for direct work related mediacal problems. It makes me ashamed as a former Recruiter to say that.
The Government lied to me and I swallowed it hook line and sinker, real sorry to my guys and gals I recruited (168 in 2 years and 7 months). My wife worked at a nursing home. No benefits but at least she was getting $7.50 an hour plus overtime. Between the 2 of us working full time we had just enough to cover the bills and go out once in awhile and buy some extras like new clothes or have a nice meal once in awhile.
Let's shift to where I am now. In the Philippines. I have a 2.300 square ft house paid for. 2,500 sqft of yardspace. 3 bedrroms ( american sized) 2 baths, large kitchen, dining room, carport, front porch big enough for 20 people easily. A recently new big suv 2004 model all paid for. A jeepney for the family just to have a tinker project. A carport big enough for 2 large cars and a driveway half as big as the street I used to live on and I live in the city. Best part is it's all on my Navy retirement. In addition to that if that were not enough, I can afford a full time live in maid, a driver, a gardener and as many helpers for whatever project I would like to do. No, I do not live in the country out in the sticks. I live in one of the smaller cities than Cebu but I still have new shopping malls and modern hospitals if I need them. I have never dreamed I could have it so good.
Tropical weather, beautiful islands and sunsets and warm friendly english speaking people. The people of the Philippines are the best in the world. I have found my paradise and you won't get me to leave for anything. I am one happy Kano.
