What color should my walls be with a dark blue rug?

I'm moving into a room with a dark blue rug and I want to paint the walls. It's pretty much a straight dark blue with no other hints of color. It's a dining room being converted into a bedroom, so it's about twice the size of a normal bedroom. I'm male and my furniture and wall hangings are of an old european theme (dark wood, tapestries, old maps etc.). I want to convey a masculine, yet warm and inviting feel to the room. Since the carpet color doesn't afford me many painting options, I wanted to see what you thought.
I have a color in mind, but I wanted to see what other people thought because perhaps there is something I haven't thought of myself. Thanks for your input.

You know, you have more options than you think.

Some ideas:

White/off white -- this is the "safest" choice, but will also look the most "unfinished." There are lots of shades of white out there. The drawback to white is that with the walls so much lighter than the flooring, your floor may scream "BLUE!" at people.

Taupe -- (Girl word for darker beige with some gray in it) I like this option. It can pick up the color in your furniture and compliment the rug while not providing as much contrast as white might.

Creamy yellow -- select this and you will be doing a version of a triad color scheme (blue, red, yellow). Your rug is blue, the furniture the red and the walls yellow. This might look more contemporary than you want. It will compliment the furniture and make the carpet stand out.

Gray -- this is my favorite choice. If you select the right color of gray, it will compliment the rug (and make it seem like part of the background) and give a nice contrast to your furniture so it stands out. Also, it would be very masculine.

Dark blue is a great masculine color! Pale brown or taupe with brownish tint would compliment your furnishings. This color is very masculine, restful, warm and inviting. You can put accent rugs on top of the blue carpet by the sides of your bed or at the end of the bed or by a seating area. When you have a very large room kind of defines the functions of the room, like a reading area . Depending of the colors in your tapestry, you could get bed covers and rug to tie the color together.

Depending on if you have windows that gives a lot of light with the dark blue carpet and the dark wood furniture you might want to try a light color wall like sky blue, off white cream or yellow. It will give the room a airy sea like feeling, but if you don't have windows and you prefer a darker setting with the hotel feel then dark walls with a white/cream trim or even a trim that matches your furniture. What ever you chose get a nice comforter to match. Lady's love an inviting bed and so would you.

Try a beige color, not cream but not dark - something in between...it will go nicely with the dark blue rug and will be a nice contrast with the dark wall hangings. Better still, get a medium shade of beige and compliment it with a lighter shade, then take painter's tape and measure out vertical stripes on the wall, alternating light and dark color all the way around. That would look really nice as well.

A warm taupey gold color on the walls with dark wood would go perfectly. Try something that has a yellow tone to it since yellow and blue are on the opposite sides of the color chart and they do compliment each other. A caramel or coffee color on your walls would look best. Do not paint your trim stark white either since that would really not go very well but paint them in a lighter shade such as cream.

I would go with a neutral color for my walls. Or you can do a glaze technique using the dark blue on the walls with a lighter color on top. Either rag off or sponge off. The sponge off would probably be easier.
Just go to The Home Depot or Lowe's or any type of Paint place and look around at the color swatches this will give you some much needed ideas.

You could always paint the walls a pale blue and add a border at the top to bring in a theme of something you'd like, ie. ships, sea, etc. Then if you ever get tired of the border, it's less expensive than repainting.

You could also paint the walls a pale yellow and possibly add a throw pillow on a chair or bed to bring that color into play no matter what color you select.

What color is your bedspread? Your curtains if you have any?

First of all, although spills wont show up as much on dark carpet, everyday things, dirt, sand, hair is a bi**h to keep up. I would buy a throw rug to brighten it up. If you spill on it, you can toss it, however it will keep you from vacuuming everyday. You can use the colors from the throw rug or find ones that complement it.

Hey!...look, maybe the best color for you walls its white.. the dark blue does not let you use others colors try white.... it on my opinion will be the best choice... take care bye..
