Because their parents don't have time for them so they give them these things as a substitute for their time. It has evolved into a pop culture race for the coolest. It's disgusting.

I honestly have no idea. Parents spoil their kids too much these days. I'm nearly 21. I've never had a cell phone, ipod, digital camera, etc. Yet I see kids that are 9 and 10 walking around town with them. Shouldn't they at least be able to pay for these items themself before having them? I guess it's just how I was raised. A friend of mine bought her 10 year old a digital camera for Christmas. What was the point in that? I plan on getting one this year because I have 2 kids. I understand if a kid takes on a paper route or saves allowance and chooses to buy one of these things for themself after saving their money. As far as parents going out and buying their kid everything they want, that's uncalled for.

They do not NEED these items. They want them and many parents that do not spend the time they should with their children give these items to them. Cellphones are a little different - those kid friendly ones with three programable numbers-because they are a huge safety help with all the crazy people out there today.

I don't know. I think that kids get way to much these days. I can understand a family computer to do homework but not having a personal computer. I don't think kids need Ipods or cellphones. I think a family t.v is okay as long as the parents are monitoring what the kids are watching.

Yikes, have you struck a chord with me! As a teacher (of children about 10-11 years old), I am tired of dealing with kids with cellphones in class, not to mention hand held video games, Ipods, and such. Parents go crazy when we try to explain that these things don't belong at school, let alone, turned on! One mom said "If something goes bad at school , you call me immediately!" Pleeeeeze.

Children don't "need" any of that stuff. American families have been so brainwashed by advertisers creating needs where needs really don't exist.
Take cell phones for example. They're okay as long as they're programmed for 911, mom, dad, grandpa, grandma and some other emergency only contact.
Cameras are okay. Many serious photographers got started as kids.
I-Pods. Totally UN necessary!
Computer are okay, as long as they are in a PUBLIC part of the house where mom and dad can easily monitor the kid's activities.
TV. Only in a public part of the house where mom or dad can monitor.

They don't really. However, I did find myself in a pickle with my son playing sports last year. Because so many kids do have cell phones, there are no longer easy ways (the school being opened, or a pay phone) for him to call me when they are back on campus after an activity. I will probably make arrangements for him to have one next year, even if he usese his dad's on days he'll be out of town. It's a real trip! Also kids really do need access to a computer of some sort to do school work now by upper elementary school.

they dont NEED anything other than food, water, air, shelter, and love from you. out of that, all I have thats my own is a cellphone and I need it so that I can keep in touch with my family. if I need to be picked up or am in trouble, I need to be able to contact my family. I dont have an Ipod, digital camera, my own computer, or my own tv. I just use what I have and Im fine. however, I dont think any 'children(5-12)' need any of these items.

Kids do not need these items. When I was a kid we went outside, rode bikes, jumped rope, had foot races. Not sit in front of the computer all day and play video games. I used to beg to go outside. When I wanted to play with the kids on my street, I walked onto their porches and rang the bell and asked if they could come out, not call next door from my cell phone or IM them to meet me outside. No kid can give a jusitifiable reason for NEEDING these items. When I have children, they will not have these things until they can buy them for themselves.

Because parents are more concerned about being a 'freind' to their child instead of the parenting figure!
I remember being a child (in the 80's yes) and yearning for a powerwheels, or a walkman, or boom-box, cabbage patch kid, teddy ruxpin, or trapper keeper. All the COOL KIDS had them, and I wanted to be looked at and admired.
I never had those things, because my parents didn't want to enstil in us a sense of entitlement. Because we are not entitled to be handed everything in this world, just because we want it.
I am glad I was raised this 'old school' way. I was made to work for, and earn what I wanted. And whaddya know....that is exactly what adult life is! Good thing I was prepared to function in society.

well not all of those Items are a need most of them are a want, but in some cases the Child needs them.. like a cell phone, my cousin is into alot of sports and after school activity's, so he needs the cell phone to be able to keep in contact with his parents. and even thought it's not the only thing that we use it for but the Computer is also used for school work and stuff like that. outside of that they just want them to be cool, and because everyone else has them.
