Chickens are always female. The male chicken is called a rooster and they are rarely sold in supermarkets.

Just imagine if they keep slaughtering all the women in the world, there wouldnt be any female left, same goes for the chickens. If they slaughter all the hens then the rooster have to be friendly with another rooster and there will be no more little chicks running around. This will turn the rooster gay in the chicken world.

Technically, chicken refers to the group of poultry. Female chickens are hens. Males are roosters. We buy hens in the grocery stores.

They keep the females for producing eggs...
As you might know, the chicken gives eggs anyway (without the rooster interference)... If the rooster makes love to a chicken, :) , then this egg will have a chick in it...

Female, when you buy a male chicken it will be called a Capon and will be larger than a regular chicken.
