I'm babysitting my cousin who will be 2 in October and his parents are trying to get him to stop drinking a bottle. He keeps asking for one though and my mom said to give him his bottle only with water. Isn't this defeating the purpose? Or does it actually make a difference?

I put milk in his sippy cup and pretended to drink from it, so he immediately wanted it! Haha I so got him...

Tell the parents of your cousin to check into sippy cups by Nuby. They are a cross between bottles and hard plastic sippy cups. They helped ween my daughter off bottles.
But above all, it is not YOUR responsibility to ween him. I would ask his parents how they would like you to handle it, and follow their instructions. That is what I would want a babysitter for my two kids to do.
Good luck.

Give that kid a regular cup or a sippy while your baby sitting him than eventually he wont want a bottle anymore tell him if he wants to be a big boy he needs to drink from a big boy cup.. And DO NOT give in to him and give him a bottle when hes at your house unless he absolutely will not take the sippy

2 is way too old to be drinking from a bottle, even if it is just water. You're right, it would defeat the purpose. I would just try giving him a sippy cup, or a regular little cup and telling him,"You can drink out of the Big Boy cup now!" My daughter is 2, and she always tries anything if I tell her it is a "Big Girl" anything.

My daughter will also be two in October and I never gave her a bottle so I never had to worry about that. I don't see why they don't just stop giving it to him. He should be able to drink out of a regular cup or at least a sippy cup. I don't see the point of giving him water in a bottle. Sounds like you have more sense than your family.

Well, she's half right. The idea is, if he is only allowed to drink water from the bottle but can drink more interesting things such as juice from a cup, he'll eventually go for the cup.
However, at some point if this doesn't work he should be weaned from the bottle. I've heard of people doing "goodbye" celebrations for binkys and such. The same could be done for bottles, especially on his second birthday.

The best way to wean a child from the bottle is either wait till they give it up by themselves or let the child help you put "all" the bottles in the trash can and they see it taken away. Then they know there is no more bottle! Then you don't have to feel guilty about not giving in.But usually when the child helps dispose of the bottle they realize it's gone! Most will give up the bottle with no crying at around age 2 to 2 1/2.If they have it beyond that age it's more difficult to get it away from them.

My daughter will be 2 in Sept. My husband and I broke her from the bottle at 9 months. What we did was gave her a bottle with a sippy cup nipple on it. To most kids they are used to rubber or silicone nipple for most their lives to switch them over night is strange and hard for them. You can get the sippy cup nipples that are silicone at Wal-Mart. They are made by Nuby I think and they worked for us. I would not give your cousin the bottle if his parents told you not to then don't. It is there choice weather or not he gets the bottle not your or your mom's choice. It would your or your mom's choice if it was your child or your mom's child. Think of how his parents might react. They might have had him almost broke from the bottle and you giving him the bottle might mean they a have to start all over again.

Take the bottle away..The reason why your mom said to put water in it is to preserve his teeth..The sugar in the milk or juice rots the teeth..The bottle should have been taken away at the one year mark..Give him a sippy cup with water in it..!! Or try sippys with straws make it fun...

Stop giving him the bottle all together. When he asks for it, hand him his sippy cup instead. Get him used to the fact that he can't have his bottle or you'll never get anywhere with him. Giving it to him is like giving in. You have to let him cry without for awhile, then he'll realize that he won't get anywhere. It sounds harsh but it works.

first of all do what HIS parents say. I can understand where your mom is coming from because if he has teeth drinking milk and juice from the bottle will make them rot faster. But he needs to be weened off the bottle so give him everything in a cup. he will be whinny, but hey, he's the child. you are the babysitter.
