If you have the budgerigar, the color of its cere(nose) is the major clue. A male's nose is blue or purple.A female budgie's nose can be light blue, pink,or tan(or a mix of pink and light blue). If you have a pied mutation, the cere may not have enough pigment changes to be able to sex the bird.Behavioral differences are in the way a bird sits on the perch;females tend to sit pitched forward while males sit upright.
Go and buy yourself some manuals on your bird for other tips.I've owned birds all of my life and keep up by reading manuals and magazines to ensure that my birds have a great life.My grandfather bred budgies and had an aviary of over 100;I've had quite a few budgies and currently have a parrot, parakeet and a budgie(she's a girl;her nose is pinky-tan with light blue on the sides).

Yes, like the person says you look at the beak, particularly the fleshy area above the beak. In males it has a blue tint, in females pink.

Most parakeets in the pet supply chain are male. Vets may be able to tell... but why bother. I'm sure it won't mind you calling it a guy even if it was female...

Yes...I agree, you can tell its male if the nostrils are blue and pink or light brown for the female. When they are young it is harder to tell...sometimes they have to be a year or older to see the colors.

Put a can of beer and a phone on a table let the bird fly
if it lands on the beer it's male,
if it lands on the phone it's female!

when they are babies you can tell by the color of their cere - the little fleshy area at the top of the beak. I think that if it is blue then it is a boy.
