No, we can't. In order for Communism to work, it's been historically proven that several things must occur:
1. supression of dissent. This leads to the persecution of intellectuals, inclusing teachers, professors, politicians, lawyers... basically anyone who conflicts with the Communist party line. Usually, they're thrown into prison camps that make Gitmo look like a walk in the park.
2. suppression of art. Art is by nature subversive. Most of the great works turned out by Soviet authors were either written in exile or smuggled out of the country. Or they were never written at all. Or their authors were sent into the prison camps. Siberia in winter, anyone?
3. suppression of civil rights. If you don't supress freedom of speech, freedom of the press, etc, you end up with a political movement against the party. So you throw offenders into again, prison camps. My rights are violated enough, thank you.
4. suppression of religion. Americans may be wacked, but we're religious. Though I'm not for the brand of right-wing Jesus that seems to be popular these days, I do believe that a firm backing in religion provides ethics and moral guidance which lead to moral and ethical political action.

The Soviet Union killed millions of its people. Lenin starved people to death. Communism is not a Che shirt and rights for the workers. It's oppressive in practice. Perhaps in a group of ten people, communism can work. On the level of a nation-state, it's hopeless.

I agree with the above answer. This is EXACTLY what Lenin tried to do in 1917 and for EXACTLY the same reasons. It failed, horribly. Boris Berszevsky gave the best and simplest explination of why communism doesnt work. He said "Communism tries to make all men equal. All men are most definatly NOT equal".

Corruption and laziness would be rampant.
You would not be able to abolish religon (even Stalin couldn't, and he killed millions trying).
You could not abolish class (even in the soviet union you had rich and poor).

Marx had good ideas, but they could never be put to use preactically.
