AKC stands for The American Kennel Club. All dogs that are recognized breeds have to meet their standards for size, shape, bearing, etc. Go to their web site and check it out. When someone says that a "...a dog has papers" it's the AKC certification they're talking about.

The American Kennel Club is a dog registery service.
When the breeder tells you the dog is papered it means the pups parents were registered with AKC. And that the breeder registered the litter and each puppy will be sold with a registration slip to send in to AKC to get the pups registraion certificate.

AKC- American Kennel club

The AKC is not the only registry of purebred dogs, but it is the one with which most Americans are familiar. For a dog to be registered with the AKC, the dog's parents must be registered with the AKC as the same breed, and the litter in which the dog is born must be registered with the AKC. Once these criteria are met, the dog can be registered as purebred by the AKC.

The AKC divides dog breeds into seven groups-
* Sporting Group: 26 breeds[2] developed as bird dogs. Includes Pointers, Retrievers, Setters, and Spaniels.

* Hound Group: 22 breeds[3] developed to hunt using sight (sighthounds) or scent (scent hounds).

* Working Group: 24 large breeds[4] developed for a variety of jobs, including guarding property, guarding lifestock, or pulling carts.

* Terrier Group: 27 feisty breeds[5] developed to hunt vermin and to dig them from their burrows or lairs. Size ranges from the tiny Cairn Terrier to the large Airedale Terrier.

* Toy Group: 21 small companion breeds[6].

* Nonsporting Group: 17 breeds[7] that do not fit into any of the preceding categories, usually larger than Toy dogs.

* Herding Group: 18 breeds[8] developed to herd livestock.

The AKC is the organization that registers the accepted dog breeds and maintains the breed standards. This is the one that you want to look for when buying a purebred dog. There are some bogus orgs that were formed just so people could say that their dogs are registered. Make sure who they are registered with. Their site is great for getting to know the different dog breeds.
