anybody know? I heard that we only just finished paying off the debt a couple of years ago. And did we have to pay any other countries like canada, australia or new zealand?

Well - As has been said - Britain has been paying off the US all these years... But! I remember a tale my grandfather told me - He was a merchant seaman - hauling cargos all around the world during that time..

Basically - Yes - The US did "Loan" us supplies - BUT! on their terms - imagine a loan where you can only spend your credit on items you are told you can buy - not on what you actually need! He recounted several stories where he had to sell several cargoes of "Crap" back to the Americans, that we had been forced to buy, for pennies, just so they could free up the holds for cargoes the actually needed.. The Canadians were much more helpful!.. Its quite amazing that in these days of helping african countries, that debts from 60 years ago between "Allies" are still being paid.. How much does it cost Britain to fix all americas mistakes? The Russians left afghanistan after a great many years - The US strolls in - takes the oil & expects it to be fixed over night - but low and behold - the yanks turn tail & run, when the realise the true enormity of the task ahead - In steps Britain - you need a hand? And we get lumbered with a typical US mess...

I'm not anti American, but I believe that our "Aliance" isn't on a true footing... A bit more "equality" is needed!!!

Wel, as far as I know, Britain didn't have to pay the U.S. for the actual war effort, but rather for the build up of the country after the war ... The UK took a loan from the U.S. for $586m (about £145m at 1945 exchange rates), and a further $3,750m line of credit The loan was to be paid off in 50 annual repayments starting in 1950, and the interest rate was fixed at 2%.

Rather generous terms ... :)

The British have been paying America back slowly but Britain gave America the Diego Garcia islands in the Indian ocean out of the British empire as a thank you

Britain was on the brink of collapse when the war started and the supplies brought in by the americans propped up the country.

They did not have to pay anything. All of Great Britain's war debt to the US was forgiven once the fighting stopped.

Pay? Zero. In fact the USA paid to rebuild all of Europe under the Marshall Plan. Any loans to the UK were for reconstruction.

They didn't have to pay for the alliance they paid for other war costs. Such as the p-38's and other planes they got from the US.
