I wouldn't say a Camaro is white trash, unless you make it one, drive it right, regular maintenance and you should be fine if you don't buy a lemon.

Hell no I own a 1985 Camaro Z-28 It's a great car if it's taken care of, Mine has a 5.7L V-8 and it probably runs better than it did brand new, it's the same as any car take good care of it and it will last a long time.
Plus as I see it the camaro is better than the BMW or mercedes, Mine will make 400HP on regular ( I use premium because it's easier on the engine) It's an easy car to mantain and modify
Heres how I treat my baby:
-Use Premium gas
-Use only synthetic oil
-Only race at a track (Street racing is VERY DANGEROUS)
-If paint is chipped use touch up paint to fix the paint, because exposed metal can start rusting

Well, I am afraid I will offer a different view from most of your other respondants. I don't know about the necessity of bringing race into the discussion of the class merits of Camaros, Trans Ams and the like, but it is definitely a car that seems to attract drivers with little taste or sophistication. It also seems to attract the interest of insurance companies who offer high premiums on it and police who seem to like to ticket them inordinate to their numbers on the road.
That said, there are not many cars you can find that come right off the assembly line with that kind of power and performance, and have the potential for generating still a great deal more without a significant investment in modification. If you want something fast and cheap that, yes, also looks a little cheap, Camaro is not a bad choice.

Maybe earlier generations are white trash. The newer ones are just trash, but admittedly fast trash. I think the last Camaros were built by blind men. They may go down in history as America's first biodegradable car. Why do you think they don't make them anymore?
Get a Mustang GT or a used Corvette C5.

The nice thing about the later Z-28's and TA's is you can hand the BMW driver his *** if he does make a comment. The LS1 engine is easy to get over 500 horses and with a manual transmission gets 30 mpg on the highway.

Not necessarily. A good one that has been kept up nice will not be trashy. But a camaro has it's own feel, it will feel different driving one because of the way you sit. Some people love it and some people hate it. I had a Z28 and loved mine.
