If you were a lady, you wouldn't be getting arrested. That happens to common criminals.
They probably used the hinged cuffs because you were being combative, and they wanted to neutralize you.

A lady isn't cuffed for no reason, and a lady doesn't cause concern for officers to the point they need more secure cuffs, not to mention a lady is never in a situation where she attracts the attention of the police. So lets not pee on us and tell us it's raining. Okay?
To answer your question, the hinged cuffs are more secure in that the distance between the bracelets is shorter and they don't individually twist. You apparently demonstrated that you're uncooperative and would try to slip out of the cuffs or get your hands in front of you and probably try to run. And policy does not allow for anyone to be cuffed in front except under very specific circumstances. You were being arrested. You weren't in any position to expect privileges.

Policy of most, if not all departments, states prisoners will be handcuffed behind, not in front. No cuffs are 'designed to hurt' and they are all designed to be secure. As to the type used, it is usually just personal preference on the part of the officer, so I would have no idea why the suggestion was made. Did you ask?
Is there a difference between types of cuffs. Of course, an excerpt from a web page: But what of the cuffs themselves? Do they make a difference? Are there really differences between all of the various cuffs and cuff types available? Of course...
But the differences have nothing to do with being more secure. I will put the web page in the source so you can read more if you're interested.

Ladies don't get arrested for any reason. You don't treat suspects like a lady. Whatever you did or said got you cuffed. Police carry the hinged ones not the plastic things. You just don't seem to mention why you were stopped or taken in by the police in the first place. I wonder why.......

Most likely you were not cooperative with the officers, and they wanted to make sure, for their safety, that you were as secure as possible.
You do not say why you were arrested, but you complain that you were not treated like a lady. When your actions cause you to be arrested, you are a most likely committing a criminal act. You may not be a common criminal, but even an uncommon one needs to be cooperative with the police.
You seem to think that you are a victim here, where in reality you are just another fool who broke the law and got caught!!

It sounds like you were in some kind of state where the police felt that extra precautions were needed. That is just a guess as I cannot know the mind of the officers, even based on your narrative. As far as I know, there shouldn't have been any pain unless you were struggling with them. The worst that you should have felt was some stiffness in your shoulders and perhaps a little bit of pain that should have subsided by now.

in case you've been no longer breaking the regulation and inflicting your self to be arrested you'll not have this difficulty. i have seen many a one hundred lb woman be a actual possibility. The tight hardware, as you call it, is simply by the indisputable fact that is bodily a lot less complicated for women to contort OUT of handcuffs that look securely locked. were you appearing respectful on the time? what's your description of being respectful?
