I have what I think must be a bite on the back of my neck. It's caused quite a large (about 3 inches wide) very red mark, it was very sore for about two days, felt like a burn and the skin feels very rough, sandpaper-like, almost again like a healing burn. Anyone know what it could be?

possibly a spider bite...if it continues to stay red and sore or starts to turn a dark color you need to be seen by a doc as soon as you can....because sometimes with certain type of spider bites the tissue necroses and it needs to be debraded.....and you need to be on some meds....

If it were a horsefly you'd have heard it; they're like a B52 coming in to land. It could have been an Assassin Bug, if you were lying on the ground when bitten. Except with both those you get an egg sized lump. It could be heat rash perhaps? It sounds more like a nettle sting than an insect bite.
Just put a cool compress or some calamine lotion on it.

It could be some type of odd spider or bug bite that you are having an allergic reaction to. Go to the doctor immediately for examination and treatment if you want to be safe. I would!

It might not be a bite. It could be a sabaceous cyst or an ingrown hair. Have someone take a polaroid of it... see if there is pus.

spider, probably getting infected. Better get it checked out. My dad had a bit very similar and it turned out to be a spider and when he got it checked, he had gotten a staff infection from it..

could be a gland infection or spider bite, a spider bite has two puncture wounds, if no puncture then possibly gland!
