because they are very slow moving/living. Are reptiles so they do not make and use the energy required to heat themselves. (they use the sun). And they have a lot of an antioxidant chemical called superoxide dismutase (s.o.d.) That chemical prevents oxygen radicals form causing damage to the chemical D.N.A. which is made before cell division. Damaged D.N.A. eventually impairs or kills cells. The longer we live the more the errors pile up.
Longlived animal species have more s.o.d. The longest lived animals have the most s.o.d. (e.g. Galapagos turtles).

First not all turtles live longer than humans, but the really big ones have a very long life span. As in all animals there is a biological clock that dictates their expected life. It is very much like a car that slowly breaks down so do their bodies. Every animal has a predictable life span, from a day for mayflies to perhaps centuries for tortoises. Animals kept in captivity often live longer than their wild relatives from better care, better nutrition much as man is doing now. People do live longer now and soon we may reach the same age as do tortoises.
