Genealogy is studying the history of a family, usually tracing one's ancestry through parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. It can be as simple as just finding and listing the names of direct ancestors or as complicated as finding and detailing the lives of each direct ancestor as well as aunts, uncles and cousins as far back as possible based on historical and family documents, family stories and pictures, etc.

For Americans especially genealogy is an exploration of family roots and origins. For example: great grandpa came from Scotland and great grandma was Polish and they met in Chicago at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. He was an operator of the Ferris Wheel and she rode on it every day.
