The humerus is the bone of the upper arm, connecting your shoulder to your lower arm bones which are called the ulna and the radius.

There is nothing "funny" about the humerus except that its name sounds like "humerous", a word meaning funny or amusing.

Thus, calling the humerus the "funny bone" is a play on words - humerus - humerous... get it??? It's gotta be one of the oldest jokes in medicine!

The elbow is the name given to the joint between the humerus and the ulna/radius of the lower arm. A whole bunch of nerves run through this area and sometimes when you hit that area the nerves fire off pain signals which give you that "hitting your funny bone" sensation. You haven't actually hit your humerus but the nerves running close by it. The fact that it "feels funny" adds to the "funny bone" joke.

It isn't funny.. but it is a funny feeling when you strike your elbow with your ulnar nerve being exposed and you get a tingling sensation shooting down your arm.

Nothing. It hurts way too bad when it gets hit or something.
