If you are referring to Mexican or South American illegal immigrants, I guess it would help to actually take a trip there and see conditions first-hand. I have, and I truly think I could not survive living there long-term. I also remember seeing Tijuana up close, and it would be impossible to stay there for even a full day. There is a huge range of economic levels, of course, but after seeing a family near Mexico City - of about 10 - crowded in two or three small rooms with dirt floors and without electricity or beds for all of them, I absolutely understand why the United States is like the Promised Land for them.

Empathy is nice, but the law needs to be satisfied on this issue.
Empathy is an influential thing that makes it so you vote for policies that don't really get the job done, leave questions unanswered, leave dark corners for problems to hide in, basically your better bleeding-heart politicians really like empathy because they can use it to pull your heart strings etc. That's why they use babies in front of TV cameras as political tools. They call politics the 'art of the possible', it's also known as the Mother Of All BS Stories.

We're getting played, here, and not just by Mexico.

Sure one can empahize with SOME of them ... there are no doubt hard working illegals who want to have a chance to better themselves, and who find waiting in a line forever to have a chance to do so daunting ... I can empathize with those who have been here for years and years, built a family, contributed and lived a peaceful, law abiding life here ... I can empathize will all that ... BUT ... there IS a reason why we have immigration laws ... one of many reasons is we need to know who is coming across our borders, where they originate, and why they are here ...

Another reason is we have to calculate who pays for what ... an unidentified and uncalculable amount of people will of course put a strain on any budget ... hospitals and housing authorities etc. can't plan or budget for an unknown quantity of illegals - 12 million today, 20 million tomorrow, etc.

A third reason is of course security ... you don't know, and I don't know, who is crossing the border and what they have in mind ... I do know however, from listening to interviews on television with various FBI officials, that Al Quaida is very aware of our lax border security ... not to mention all the criminals, drug pushers, child molesters, etc. which are I'm sure you agree not wanted here ....

I think the mistake pro illegal people make is that they ONLY think of the honest hard working, poorly educated people who come here, albeit illegally ... and don't give enough thought to WHO ELSE gets across the open border ... and even the genuinely poor, hard working etc. people who come across here should do it legally ... it prevents a lot of hassle and hardship for them, and a lot of hassle and grief for this nation, its citizens and legal immigrants ...

There IS no other country in the world that I know of that allows a totally open border policy, with no checks or balances ... come one, come all ... overall, and NOT being a racist, which has absolutely nothing to do with the debate about the illegals, illegal immigration is bad for the country, and bad for both the legals and illegals ... and for the American tax payers, who are left to pay for this whole sorry mess ...

I'd like someone to prove the accusations of prejudice and racism in the scheme of illegal aliens.

I see no empathy coming from the illegals who enter this country then go on to rape our social services. The entire world has laws and rules for humans to follow. Embracing and having compassion for people who ignore those rules and appear to be apathetic towards this county, just doesn't seem to be a rational reaction.

They will not solve any of the problems in their country by invading a different country.

I have a great deal of empathy for immigrants who want to travel to another country to improve their life and maybe help their families back home.
However, being a citizen of the U.K, I have no empathy for the hundreds and thousands of people who come here and are destroying local communities by sucking up welfare, jobs and housing. Expecting everything for nothing, because this country has a cowardly and incompetent government with no effective immigration policy. They are afraid to sound racist by saying anything negative about immigration.
It is possible not to be prejudiced and still be against immigration. You try teaching in a school where not one of your pupil's is a native English speaker. We feel swamped, powerless and un-safe in our own country.

Do I take the bread from our poor to fill someone else up? No when they are taken care of -than reach out.

Would you feed your neighbors poor dog and let yours starve?

We have empathy--If Illegals are starving--go to the hospital. Not one hospital record -not one-shows this has happened here.

But we have them -some eating out of garbage cans in every city. You name one city that doesn't have this. Why don't you tell them why others deserve it more--go spend a day with them if you have so much empathy. Tell me what they said to you question when your done there. And many are Vets-who served this country or disable-or old and now families are increasing in that number. I'll await your answer when you visit them.
And no--their isn't a program for them-do you think their all to lazy to apply?

Look on Web-under -homeless-disable-Vets-those who can not afford their medicine

Your wecome. And Thank-you

First if all demanding that OUR laws be upheld and enforced DOES NOT make one prejudice. Human side, fine. There NO justification for the willful and deliberate breaking of the laws which ALL of the illegals here are guilty of. This shows their blatant disregard for the law and for authority. They think that they can come in and do what they want and take when doesn't belong.

I'd leave a country that didn't have a decent infrastructure too...

Me myself personally, I wouldn't live in Mexico/China/Cuba/or any ex-Soviet country.

I'd immigrate over to somewhere else. But I couldn't live on the run...i'd want to become part of the country too. I wouldn't vote, but I would definitely want to do everything else the locals do...
provided the locals are decent, kind people (not like some of the folks on Y!Answers)

Yes.

1. For those here.

Here their children get universal education they don't get at home, and basic health care they don't get at home.

Here they can make a lot more money.

Discounting those in gangs or who commit other crimes, many are hard working and doing their best to give value to our community as well as to their family. The fact that even if they pay taxes they don't pay the bulk of education and services is not in thier power to control any more than it is for poor people legally here.

We did not enforce our laws for a LONG time and incrementally, for humanitarian reasons, added to the benefits we gave them. This created a very mixed signal about whether they were wanted here.

Many brought here as children don't know their home country and know no other life.

Also, as a practical matter, I for one am fine with deporting all 302,000 who are estimated to be going to enter our local and state jails this year, but would have a really hard time seeing kids from my children's school deported - and this would be happening everywhere.

I think we need to stop it going forward, firmly. I think we need to dismantle benefits and get national ID and employer databases and be willing to deport them as we find them in the future. But once I have border security, I'd give amnesty (not to bring in absent family - due to numbers) for screened illegals already here.

2. For those who want to come here, who wouldn't want to go where their children get free education and health care? However the reason their government doesn't give it to them is that it is expensive. Currently it is costing us money and is costing our children their own education. We have to stop it, and limit immigration going forward in a way that protects our services.

Most come here to work so they can provide for their family. Who wouldn't do anything for their family? If I was in a position where i could go to another country and make 10 times more than I make here it would be a no brainer. Especially if I'm living in some hut in a village.........
