For the same reason people do not worship Mohammed, or Gandhi, or even Martha Stewart. They are not God.
It has been suggested in some places (can't remember if it was in H.G. Wells's "The Outline of History" or not) that a new religion for the Industrial Age is needed, as the entire Judaeo-Christian-Islamic system is based on the beliefs of nomadic tribesmen.
Do you really want to go back to the beliefs of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who deified heroes and rulers, and maintained temples to their cults? (Though I suppose the Ronald Reagan Heritage Project would qualify.) Good God, people singing the praises of George W. Bush are bad enough - imagine people worshiping him!!
It is no different when one worships philanthropists. Forget that nonsense and either contribute to their work or do your own bit to help other people. And (assuming you are a believer) worship the real God.

You think they are great, but they are not. They support abortion. They give tons of money, but still live in mansions- why not try life as it is for the rest of us? And you call them the greatest people on earth? Let me tell you, everyone is a sinner, nobody is perfect, and nobody is better than anyone else. It makes no sense whatsoever to worship people. The only One worthy of our praise and adoration is God, who created this universe and loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die the most painful death to pay the penalty for our sins that we might live with Him forever! Be warned: do not worship mortal men!
