No They are the result of lactic acid fermentation which kills food spoilage and pathogenic micro-organisms,. Dill pickles are similarly treated, as well as silage for cattle. None of them require heat, (and usually pressure), to sterilize them.
Such fermentation does not require smokink nor salted-drying in order to work. Though some products get that additional treament for taste reasons. (e.g. smoked sausage.)

No, it does not need to be cooked. I believe the meat turns red from being smoked.
