his liver and kidneys will eventually fail. other problems, such as respiratory depression which can lead to heart arrest can occur, since one of the major side effects of painkillers is a decrease in breathing rate. if he is taking large amounts of painkillers at one time, his breathing can become SERIOUSLY compromised. also, he could have some serious problems with his stomach/intestines. another side effect of painkiller use is constipation, which, if he is taking them in large quantities, can cause some major damage to the intestines as well as cramping, discomfort, and pain. not to mention the effects of any painkillers with tylenol - he is just asking for a failed liver is he is taking too many of those. if he is misusing painkillers such as oxycontin by snorting them, he is also risking tissue damage to his nasal septum (a piece of tissue that separates the right nostril from the left), which can be disfiguring. any way you look at it, this is a huge problem and he needs help.

unfortunately i know someone who had this same problem. he was taking 10 AT A TIME, which is a lot worse than 10 per day. your local hospital may have a detox program if your friend is willing to go through it. the person i know is on a methadone program. some say it's substituting one drug for another, but i dont believe that. his methodone per day is controlled, and the help detox you from it once you are stable.
taking so many pills per day can really damage your body. depending on the pills it can eat away your kidney or liver and cause stomach ulcers or stomach bleeding.
i urge your friend to seek help immediately. i hope they find something that works. best wishes

eventually his liver and kidneys will fail with regular overuse/misuse. Not to scare you anymore than you might already be, but this is a big deal. If this person is really your friend, go to one person you trust that is unemotionally attached to the situation (aka, kind of an outside perspective on the situation), and ask them what they think would be best. I had a drug problem, and to let you know the worst possible thing you could do is spread your friends business, if you are going to get advice from other people, do not use names, because the one thing you need when you are trying to help an addict.....is their trust.
good luck, if you need any other help let me know, i've unfortunatly been through enough interventions with past friendship, as well as my own at one point. my e-mail is my username @yahoo.com

He is going to end up hurting himself, in trouble with the law, or hurting someone else. He needs to get into a detox program, and then a drug treatment program. It will not work unless he is ready to change his life, he may need to hit bottom first!
