I have a three year old retarded and possibly autistic son that has recently benefitted from the companionship of a 7 month old weim/gshp cross. She protects him from hurting himself and has saved him fro injury many times now. Also, since knowing her, he has really shown massive improvement in learning and communication skills (he can't communicate at all, which she also helps us with;she will bark at us if he is upset about something until we fix the problem) and to lose her would be devastating to his progress. However, our lease for the next 6 months says we cannot have pets unless they are service animals. I am just wondering where to go and what to do to get this process started. I love my son dearly, and he really needs her. He has a tendency of running off on his own, and she stays with him and brings him back to us. This is all natural reactions to her, not trained. Please, if anybody can help....

Here is an excellent site. service dogs aren't required to be certified, although many dog schools do certify them>> http://www.cofc.edu/~huntc/service.html
I'll get back with more. I do know that you have to have a Doctor write a prescription to say that your son benefits from the dog's services.>> http://www.cofc.edu/~huntc/service.html
You will have less trouble taking the dog in puplic places if she wears this >> http://www.lonewolfdogwear.com/#servicevests

A nice thing to know, is that landlords HAVE to allow the dog, and can't consider it a pet...but must rent to owners of service dogs with no extra deposit.....

I had buddy get her canine licensed. If you want to get this canine cert-ed it has to be knowledgeable by way of a professional. It would be unfair if any canine would get cert-ed with out coaching. There is aid call your neighborhood handicap carrier. And organize the dogs coaching. This canine could also be good to him, but is the dog dependable to others. Just right good fortune Rod PS From what i've learn , it sounds such as you three are valued at and most of all up to the process. Lean ahead and take step one.

Here we have a perfect example of a question with a geographical context. Where do you live--Australia, South Africa, Ireland, Texas? It might affect the answer.
Off the top of my head, I'start with your town/county clerk's office.

any doctor can write those. i know lots of people who get them and it is a fairly simple process. (atleast here in washington state). i just looked at my county's site and it states that the amimals do not need to be "trained". and that they may ask you to provide documentation about the need from a qualified professional. they may not ask for medical records, details about the disabilty or proof of animal training. these are all federal rules.
the site i went to is www.metrokc.gov it is from king county but it may be able to provide you with info (i searched for service animals). also your land lord may not require you to provide a deposit for any animal damages, but you would still need to pay for them if they occured. thanks

I could give you a couple names of Service Companies that do the same service. Is that OK?
