First of all, try not to fail the polygraph. They are indeed more concerned with your honesty than with your past.

Things they will be looking for in your past include heavy alcoholic drinking, gambling problems, relations to members of other countries, family members in Green Peace or other anti-government groups, and severe financial troubles resulting from your inability to handle your money properly. If you don't have any of those things, or can explain the ones that you do have, you should be fine.

Also, you might try joining the military as a cryptologic technician/signals analyst. That's my job in the Navy, and I didn't have to take a polygraph. We work for the NSA, and can get stationed there for a couple of years at a time.

when issuing clearences and doing questioning just don't lie! They don't care that you have smoked pot or driven while you were smashed they just want someone that is trustworthy and that can't be blackmailed into doing something for fear of being fired. I have a TS I have done all kinds of stupid **** in the past.
