There are 2 semesters. I don't know where the people with 18 week semesters go to school, but I go to school in L.A., where the semester is 16 weeks. Depending on what school you go to, you may be on a semester system, or you might be on the quarter system. In the quarter system, each quarter is about 10 weeks long.

there are 2 semesters regularly. One for Fall and one for Spring. But you can also take summer classes and there are usually 2 semesters for that also but much shorter time periods. Summber sessions are usually only a month long while regular semesters are about 4-5

College typically has 3 options.
1 16wk Spring
1 11wk Summer
1 16wk Fall
...however most universities have these broken in half as well for faster paced classes geared toward a more mature student base.
2 8wk in Spring
2 5.5wk in Summer
2 8wk in Fall
