I think this is a fun question! Some thoughts cross my mind and sort of get lost and move on before I get to ponder them... so I don't know where they've been, for how long, why they bothered dropping in at all, or where they're going. Other thoughts take a long, round-about journey in my mind and end up consuming me, until I forget what direction I was going before that wonderful distraction!

My visualization of that phrase is: your mind is going along at a normal clip, when all of a sudden a thought crosses ahead of you, sort of like animals who cross ahead of you on the road as you drive. There is no connotation of how far the animal (or thought) has been travelling, only that it crossed your path (mind's meandering journey).
