Sounds like someone tried to force the lens back into the body or dropped the camera while turned on. This would damage the motor that runs the zoom and pulls the lens back into the body when you shut off the camera. Do you see any scratches on the front or side of the lens housing? If so then you sister probably damaged it but does not want to own up to it. You can all the Canon customer support number or try a local Canon store for service. You will probably find that the cost of repair exceeds the cost of a new camera. If that is the case buy a new camera and don't lend it to your sister again. Let her brake her own camera.

And the moral is.....never lend things to your sister ever again ;-)

Hope she didnt take it to the beach and get sand in the zoom!
