i wave and smile. a lot.
sometimes big trucks look for other drivers to help inform them if there is enough room for him to change lanes and a quick flash of your lights is what they are looking for and if they are nice, they will tap their brakes to say thanks.
you can also scream thank you from your car, but thats a little nutso. however, ive done it. on thursday i screamed "you have a tail light out!" going 70 mph. he waved an acknowledgement.

I have several highway and interstate merges that I have to make in rush hour on my way to and from work each day. In my area, motorists are more intent on their own traffic advancement, so people who slow down for mergers, wave people in, etc., always get a very big wave from me. I usually wave a big thank you wave as I am merging and again after I have merged - just to cover the bases and hope that they have seen it. In heavy traffic, I don't recommend honking.

a wave, flash them a peace sign, blow a kiss.
There used to be this novelty item- from the 80s I think - I had a paddle that held messages - it had series of messages for all motoring occasions printed on individual cards - you could flip the cards to flash a message to another motorist - anything from "Thank you" to "Get off the Road".

Just a little wave of the hand and a smile will do, then remember to do the same to someone else to keep the good karma going.

I'm a Truck Driver and we comminicate by flashing our lights. when another truck passes blink blink headlights means its ok to come back over blink blink tailights means thank you . If your head to head and you want to let the other vehicle go first or make left blink blink headlights. then a wave is usally a good way to say thx.. don't use your highbeams to signal at night it just blinds the other driver. many truckers dont follow that rule but they should

Mostly when this happens to me, I just raise my hand and give a wave. If you do it in front of the rear view mirror, the other driver can see it clearly as his/her view is not impeded by anything in your car.
