Being proud of who you are and what you are. You must love your country and those you are fighting for. A soldier is a very special person.

Steph,
Although the military establishment places a premium on carrying out orders without question, history has shown that it is the intelligent soldier who sometimes turns the tide of battle. Commanders cannot know everything, and the soldier who sees an opportunity to gain a battlefield advantage, must sometimes act when there is no opportunity to ask for permission. That is why, if we had ever faced the Soviet Union in open warfare, we would have taken their lunch away from them, and left them bleeding. They were absolutely intolerant of any variation in plans. Do something different, and it's "Hello Siberia". People talk about the prowess of foreign military forces, but I would rather fight almost anybody, than a bunch of unpredictable, slightly crazy American GIs. You never know how we're gonna sneak up on you. Thats why we are at the top of the food chain.

Being a good soldier (airman, sailor, marine, etc) is beliving in yourself, and being dependable. People around you know that they can count on you to do what is right, even when that choice is the hard one. You must be willing to sacrifice some of the freedoms that you serve to defend. Personal integrity and dedication is propably the most important thing in a good servicemember.

this question can not be answered in such a small space. being a good soldier requires dedication, selflessness, intelligence, diligence, mental and physical fitness and toughness, and a lot more. i've been a soldier for 10 years, and i've seen good, bad, and middle of the road. basically, it comes down to not only a love for your country, but a willingness to do whatever it takes, including sacrificing many of the rights we fight for, inorder to preserve our freedoms that we as americans have come to know, and in some cases, take for granted.

Personal values.

Loyalty - Bear 'true faith and allegiance' to the US Constitution

Duty - Do what you should do, not what you want to do

Respect - Everyone has value.

Selfless Service - what we do is more important than ourselves

Honor - always behave in a manner that brings credit on yourself and those you represent

Integrity - be honest in word and deed

Courage - physical and moral courage. Be willing to take the necessary risks on the battlefield and be willing to choose the hard 'right' over the easy 'wrong.'

Determination - follow through, never give up

Compassion - remember that we are in the 'people' business. Our duty may require us to kill, but when it is not required that we harm others, we do not.

Civilian and proud of it. A good solider is one that shoots his commander or commander-in-chief for ordering others to commit war crimes in the name of protecting others. A good solider defends rights and freedoms at home, he or she does not invade, rape and pillage other lands. A good solider lays down his arms when he or she knows the mission is corrupt.

A good soldier is one who devotes him or herself to learning the requirements of the job and training her or himself to do it to the utmost of their ability. A good soldier is one who's totally devoted to those around him, who isn't afraid to inform his non-comms and officers what he or she thinks should be done in any given situation, but who obeys every lawful order given. A good soldier is one who realizes that others depend upon her or him doing their job to the very best of their ability and acts accordingly.
