Dissolve enough salt in warm water (body temperature) to make a strong solution and rinse your mouth repeatedly, vigourously swishing the salty water around your mouth (if the pain allows) or just allowing the brine to work in your mouth (it will make you salivate). The dental pain, especially when extremely severe, may instantly subside or perhaps take a while before it goes away, but it will (it certainly has done so for me every time I have used it, the longest it took for acute pain to stop was about two minutes. I have also seen a few others reporting near-instantaneous dental pain relief achieved in identical fashion). Repeat application of the salt rinse - even over several days in case the pain reoccurs or doesn’t fully go away - may be required. One may also lodge some salt crystals directly against the tooth or gum area that hurts.

I use this remedy myself- it really works and it is natural. To stop the pain use clove oil. You can buy this in just about any health food store. Apply just a drop or two to you finger then gently apply to the gum area of the tooth that hurts. Use sparingly because this stuff is very strong and using more than a couple of drops will not provide more effective pain relief, just irritation! The stuff doesn't taste bad- it should taste sort of like mint but stronger. You will also feel a burning sensation at first and frankly it's not particularly pleasant, but bear with it... the discomfort will only last a few moments (during which you may want to strangle me for giving you this seemingly horrible advice). Suddenly the burning sensation will be gone and your toothache will have gone with it. You will have a numbing sensation and tremendous relief from the painful tooth which should last you an hour or so. It works way better than Anbesol! But do see a dentist soon because a toothache is a sign something is wrong and you will need professional attention ASAP!

Tylenol will help a bit. Try putting Oil of Cloves right on the area that hurts. This will reduce the pain too. There are some over-the-counter toothache gels that you might try too. They are usually next to the floss and toothpastes. As you already know, a toothache means that the nerve is being irritated in some way. You either have a cavity or an infection. Eventually the pain will go away without seeing a dentist but by then the nerve and the tooth will have died. It's better to get it treated in the early stages. BElieve me I know, I've done it the other way and now I'm in for some horrendous dental bills to fix things I let go too long

DO NOT chew aspirin or leave it on your tooth, this can cause burns on the tissue in your mouth.
You really need to see a dentist, sorry.
If it is an abscessed tooth, anything you do will only be temporary as the nerve is infected. The only way to fix this is to get the tooth extracted or have the nerve removed (root canal). There is about a 2% chance that you body will heal itself, but that means there is a 98% chance that the pain will come back and come back worse.
If it is not an abscessed tooth, then that is different. If it is a sensitive tooth and not due to decay you can use sensitivity toothpaste. Be sure to not brush too hard. If it is due to decay then the decay will only get worse, best case is that it will stay the same, but will never get better. I guess you could go around with a huge decayed tooth, a lot of people do, but it isn't a good idea for your overall health. Same things go for infected teeth, even if it doesn't hurt, you still have an infection in your head. It wears down on your immune system and can spread, and if it is already in your head, it could easily reach your brain. There have been cases of people dying from infected teeth that were not treated in time.
Don't mean to scare you but that is the truth, that is why we have dentists.

Not a good idea and no way I know of. Depending on what's causing the toothache...it will persist and get worse if the cause doesn't get treated. You could have a cavity or a chipped or cracked filling or worse an abscess. None of these will go away with simple over the counter methods. A cavity or cracked filling will only get worse and cause more problems. An abscessed tooth is severely dangerous. Left untreated the infection can travel in your blood stream. I had a friend who didn't get an abscess treated because she felt she couldn't afford it. She got the infection in her blood stream and it caused something similar to a stroke when it got to her brain. 34 years old and paralyzed along her left side. She now agrees she could have afforded the dental treatment over being paralyzed for life. Go to the dentist. Please?
