I believe that a society, to remain viable, must maintain a sense of humility and a willingness to work for "the greater good". Religion has always provided this to the general populace by establishing the understanding that there were forces at work greater than man. This created a sense of awe in the individual at the things greater than him or herself as well as engendering a legal and moral structure and framework designed to allow the individual to live in peace with him or herself and within a society as dictated by a "higher moral authority". Unfortunately, the driving force behind many of the historic great religions has been fear rather than love. Fear of exclusion from future reward, fear of damnation, fear of persecution, etc. As such, it is true in fundamentalist religious communities of many stripes all over the world today where belief is dictated by the "power structure" within the religious community and there are punishments for lack of adherence to the established dogmas. The results are clearly visible throughout history and in the chaos and difficulties of current world afffairs.
While I agree that man must abandon arrogance and seek for higher meaning and purpose in order to survive personally and societally, he must also find a structure that is not fear based in order to do so. This, unfortunately, is harder to do than say, especially in a world where the alternative to traditional religious dogma has become greed and the acquisition of material wealth.

It would depend on who is leading that society if necessary. If you have a leader who knows the true law and respects the true law then their will be order and freedom. The only law that should apply is do whatever you like as long as you don't infringe upon anothers rights or property. It's the religions/governments that try and tell people how to live (based on lies and manipulations), what to do and disallows true freedom for the sole purpose of power and control. Societies function very well until those same elements infiltrate them, then all hell breaks out, and the so called "CIVILIZED SOCIETIES form" so I give religion and it's involvement in society 2 thumbs down and my big toes as well for icing.

I think it is an insult to the life we lead to suppose there is nothing higher. All people I have known long for a sense of attachment and understanding of the world that surrounds us (whether in form of the divine or otherwise). We have an ability to perceive (in primitive sense) and ask questions which reach beyond what we can experience in the natural world.
By this I meant that though no one has ever consciously experienced infinity, we all have mind of the concept's existence. How can you know something exists without proof of it unless your very being reaches toward higher beliefs?

Slaughter20, such a society cannot exists. We all need to believe in something/someone higher, so we can blame, and then turn to in our times of need.
If not, we would be the most dreadful 'slaughter' mankind has ever known...
Stay well!

People would have to take personal responsibility and stop using religion as a reason to judge others and/or excuse bad behavior.
