When you stop asking questions, you stop getting answers. How could it be "unpatriotic" to try and learn anything? There are those who chose to take everything they are told as fact, and those who chose to research and learn.
The "they hate us for our freedoms" argument is simplistic and meaningless. Terrorists don't seem to hate Sweden, Norway, or many other places with plenty of freedom. "They hate us for our indiscriminate use of overwhelming power, political, and economic dominance and our unflinching support of repressive regimes" doesn't quite have the same ring to it, I guess.

It would be unpatriotic not do do so. You have to separate true patriotism, that practiced from the heart and with no intent than the betterment of the country, and therefore the world, from the demagogic bullshit spilled by most politicians these days.
Everyone who has even casually studied modern history knows that "terrorism" has been, to a certain extent, started by the USA. I won't go into details right now, it's not the place and I'm not the greatest expert or the best source for objective information, but the US' meddling in Middle Eastern affairs througout the Cold War left some deep scars in the people there. Combine international power games with a people long opressed by foreign powers, hardened by brutal environmental conditions and following a religion established by a warrior and you get the current result.

This question is a set up. If by this question you really mean, "Is it unpatriotic to side with terrorists and blame the people who are terrorized for what the terrorists do?", then the answer would be: yes, because if you side with enemies of your country, that is basically the DEFINITION of unpatriotic.
Many people believe that targeting unarmed civilians (the primary tool of the terrorist) is justified. This has been done all throughout history. Hitler did it with the buzz bombs and V1 rockets. It is a last ditch act of desperation. It doesn't advance the military objectives, and it can never win the hearts of your enemies, it only strengthens the resolve of those being targeted.
Since it doesn't bring about victory to the cause, the only people who use such tactics are either people who like to kill simply for the sake of killing, or people who are so ignorant, they will lay down their lives for any bad idea just to have a cause.
Of the 25 or so violent conflicts in the world today, almost every one of them involves muslems. Everywhere in the world where they can get away with it, they use violence to advance their religion. The word 'Islam' means 'submission', and they will not quit until they make the world submit, or are beaten back down to a point where they are no longer a threat. This is their histroy.
The US is one of their primary enemies, even though we freely allow muslems to live here, work here, and worship here without a fraction of the kind of persecution that muslems put upon non-muslems in the countries they control.
The US is their enemy because we stand for tolorance of all religions, and this is unacceptable to them.
Think about it. Christ taught that you must love your enemies and do good to them. The muslems teach that you must conquer your enemies and kill them. The athiests believe that there is no God to answer to and people are just random chemicals, so you can kill the weak and it is all justified. Which group do you want to live among? Is it any wonder that as a Christian nation, the US prospered and people from all countries and religions wanted to live here?

No. It is honest to look into the root causes of terrorism.
I have a lot of trouble with people who give me the impression that terrorism (or poverty or just plain meanness) somehow just happened to show up in some other country and NOW it is OUR problem.
The fact is that the United States Cavalry and the U.S, Army carried out acts of terrorism against Indians and committed acts of genocide against the Indians a long time before Saddam Hussein showed up.
Suicide car bombings and insurgencies against the United States happened in the 1960's carried out by the Black Panthers, the Weather Underground and other groups like that.
Anytime the United States starts pointing it's finger at other governments, it fails miserably at taking responsibility for the shortcomings in its own history.
How could it be unpatriotic to be honest?

Don't ever let any government, corporation, institution or anything ever stop you from asking questions. Anyone who suppresses your freedom to know more is unpatriotic. Jesus and the Buddha never shunned any question because they wanted everyone to know the truth. Governments tend to do the opposite and it does not take long to figure out why.

The terrorists we face are trying to kill innocent people. They are evil. What more could you possibly want to know?
Whenever I have seen that "root causes of terrorism?" phrase then it always leads leads to a blame-America mentality that simple doesn't make sense. Don't fall for it and don't promote it, you will eventually understand it isn't true. That is if you are honest and logical.
