Step 1: Buy appropriate serpentine belt.
Step 2: Open hood of2001 Ford Sable.
Step 3: Look on the casing over the fan and radiator. There should be a sticker there that shows how the belt is applied.
Alternate Step 4: If said sticker is not there, go to your local auto parts store and purchase a Chilton's manual for your vehicle.

On a 2000 Taurus, I had to have the front of the car up on ramps in order to get under the crankshaft pulley area to force the new serpentine belt into place. It was too difficult to do it with the car sitting on the ground and working from the top of the engine. However you may be more patient than I was. You'll also need a 1/2 inch socket drive wrench or breaker bar that you insert into the tensioner pulley to release the tension to remove and replace the belt. A friend would be helpful to hold the belt while you were threading it around the other pulleys.

All the above is correct, if you are strong and don't have the right tool to get let the tension off, put the belt around the alt last ,pull the belt real hard and put it on the pulley, done this many times.

Answer no. 1 is right, though if the old belt is still on I would draw a diagram before taking it off. Some of the cars have a diagram, and some have the wrong diagram on it.

As mentioned, belt tension is adjusted automatically by...(wait for it)... an automatic belt tensioner. If your complaint is actually some sort of belt related noise this could be coming from a worn out idler pulley, tensioner pulley or a failed belt tensioner. Any of these are very straightforward to replace.

Most of the cars and trucks have a diagram under the hood, usually right in front on top of the radiator. It looks tougher than it really is.
