This is nothing new either. For a very long time, "at least 300 years," people said this:
(Rich people are eccentric and poor people are crazy)
Everything is a lable that is put on a person to suit the need at the time.
Just like your example with the government (to suit their needs)

There is such a thing as mental illness. Just like phyical illness. At least these days they do call it an illness. There was a time when they put you away nd gave you all these drugs to make you a "zombie". Mental illness is different from physical illness in that you can't see it the way you can see a cut on your arm. What else would you call it then, if a person has issues they can't seem to control on their own?
I'm not even going to bother with the site. At least not right now. Right now I don' t have time. we'll see about later.

It could be agreed if there was no definition of Mental Wellness but work by Maria Jahoda and also the World Health Organisation go some way to define Mental Health / Wellness so ermm ...
Different frameworks different language ... And on a societal level it appears that we are stuck with 'illness' for the time being at least, even though I would say it is unhelpful, better than some that have preceded it though so maybe a small step in a better direction ...

There is nothing that can demonstrate that there is no such thing as mental illness because mental illness is very real and prevelant. If it wasnt real why would there be the whole Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV all about mental illnesses?

Yep it's just like these so called specialists to find other causes and not underlining the 'illness' and how this affects people everyday of their lives. Society in general do believe ( which is my belief) that chemical imbalances in the brain do give depressive like symptoms, feelings of anxiety and unrest.
Although not every patient that has these symptoms indeed have a mental illness-- so then where does it derive? If it's not in the brain where on earth does it come from? I would love to knoew being a recovering depressive myself. Mental illness does exist i am living proof as i am sure most of the population are.
It's the way in which we live the stress, debt, poverty, death it all has it contributions on changing peoples way of thinking. The cpoing mechanism is greatly compromised hence thats why the need for medicine to induce calm

I think this may be a question of symantics. While the article referred to clearly shows that many of the 'so-called' mental illnesses people were diagnosed with in the past were not in fact so, (just the result of narrow-minded lack of tolerance from an ignorant community in most cases).
There is ample evidence to support the conclusion that many people suffer from behaviours and actions that result from a chemical imbalance in the brain, improper development of parts of the brain physically, a malfunction in the mechanism of the brain or the results of a traumatic impact to the brain (i.e. hit with a blunt object or shot etc.).
These are the things we refer to as mental illness in the mordern world and these can be evidenced and tracked clearly with todays advances in technical medical equipment.
So yes, there is such a thing as mental illness.

If anything this article shows that there is mental illness. What it also shows is that the British are a little more cautious in diagnosing than Americans.

I know mental illness is real and very distressing. Your question does not make sense. Perhaps you too are suffering.
