Because it is nearly impossible for a person to jump out of a jet aircraft and live

Because you are nottrained to jump out of a plane and giving you a chute will kill you rather than safe you. Plus the fact that there are procedures that need to be briefed and actions done before a jump and this is not possible in a plane. Wonder how would you feel about boarding a plane and given a chute? After all the reliability promises given by the airlines?

Commercial aircraft are not designed to exit at a safe dropping altitude. Most airliners fly at altitudes that would require oxygen of a jumper. The time it would take to get everybody into a chute and lined up at an exit door even if one was built would be prohibitive. Most crashes happen on landing and takeoff so it would be rare to have a need for chutes. Also chutes are costly to maintain you can't just buy 200 of them and pack them away for a year or two then expect them to work. Too much money - too little benefit.

It would take to long to pass out and make sure people had the chute on.
It takes alot of training to use a chute and most people do not know how.
Besides in a plane crash things are moving so fast that it does not make a difference anyway.

Very good question.
I think that no training is required to float with a vest, while if you want to skydive, you'll need follow courses.

Besides, IF you end up in water with your chute, ... you'll still need a vest ! That's propably why they have vests and no chutes in airplanes.

With room inside of a commercial aircraft already at a premium, there is no place to put parachutes for passengers. Not to mention where would you stand to put it on especially if you were sitting in the dreaded middle seat. It is just not practical no matter how you look at it.

Jets are not suitable for parachute jumping. The engines would kill you. That's the reason why we always jump from "old fasioned" planes with rotor blades who are adapted for jumping. On top of that pilots of "jump planes" are especially trained. In general skydiving is safe but nevertheless almost 40 people get killed each year, al of them people who do not jump for the first time. Can you imagine the "kill rate" amongst first timers who are panicked because their plain is about to crash?

There is hopefully time to evacuate a ship - they are at sea level and travelling much slower. When the stuff hit the fan in a passenger jet, it's usually catastrophic at much higher speed and altitude, which brings their own sets of evacuation issues.

True , I would rather have my seat double as a parachute as apposed to a floatation device.
