My 7 month shih tzu has had diarrhea badly for the past day and it is really wet and smells. Right now it is 6:15am and he was throwing up that is why I woke up. I'm at a loss right now on what to do. I don't know where the problem is but this is what he ate before it happened. I gave him some salmon and chicken in his dry dog food to help with his coat, and for the first time I gave him a brewers yeast tablet made for dogs. I think it has to do with the brewers yeast tablet but I'm not a 100% sure (I will not be giving that again) so I cut out the chicken and salmon in his food as well just in case. He is still playful and happy the only thing is he needs to poo constantly and sometimes nothing comes out. If it doesn't stop by afternoon I will be taking him to the vet, but I was wondering if maybe someone may have some answers on what I can do to help him. Thank you!

Also the puppy has already completed all his vaccinations including ones like giardea (can't spell) and kennel cough. He is also on heatworm preventatives. He should be a healthy pup when we last visited the vet 2 weeks ago.

my vet isn't open today becuase it's a sunday (sighs*). so i just called the 24 hour emergency pet hospital near my house and they suggested that it had to do with the salmon i fed him and to give him another day unless it becomes bloody or major vomiting. i was told i can feed him white rice and boiled chicken to help him and also lots of water..she said i don't have to give him pedialyte if i didn't have any as long as he is drinking water.

just an update ... my puppy is doing way better now. i fed him boild chicken and rice as the vet suggested and it helped a lot. i also gave him half a teaspoon of pepto and that helped as well he has pooped only twice today and it doesnt smell anymore, but it still a little wet. i also let him run free in the yard today and i noticed he ate a whole lot of grass so i'm assuming the grass helped him out too. thank you for everyones input.

First off, I'm not a vet. However, I've dealt with this particular issue many times. Maybe it was just too many changes all at once, so add fewer at a time, possibly in smaller portions. Both salmon and chicken can have a lot of fat, which can definitely result in both stinky diarrhea and vomiting.
Dogs are pretty hardy creatures, even the toy breeds, so I don't worry (too much) if we can't clear up the runs for a few days - as long as the quality is improving. Yakking stuff up more of a concern, and more than a few episodes in the space of a day will usually result in a vet visit. Dehydration is the biggest concern. Is he drinking, and is it staying down? Is he peeing normally? If these answers are 'no' - head for the vet.
If he seems to be feeling fine otherwise, I'd just give it some time. Plain white rice (I prefer steamed) is a good diet for a few meals to help get his gastrointestinal tract back in working order. Make it with beef or chicken broth if the plain rice isn't enticing enough. Best wishes, and you have my empathies. - g^2

Is the stools bloody? It could be worms. Worms has a tendancy to make the feces stink also, you said you had all vaccinations so it is very doubtful it is parvo, but i have known puppies to get parvo even after having the vaccinations for it, even though this is very rare. I suggest you get it to the vet asap. It could be the brewers yeast tablet that did this, and then again it could of gotten into something that made it sick Also, you said you fed your dog salmon, depending on the dog depends on the dogs system and the salmon may have done an upset. There is also such a thing in salmon poisoning in dogs.
was it fresh salmon or canned salmon? The fresh salmon is the most popular for causing salmon poisoning. I feed my dogs the raw diet and feed them anything they can possibly want, but have never fed salmon, how long did the salmon sit out uneaten before the dog ate it? It could of spoiled is why I am asking, but if the dog ate it right away then it did not spoil. good luck with your dog, hope the sickness is just something it ate and nothing real serious.

Don't feed him all the "people" food. If you feed him a good high end dog food his coat and skin will be great. I bath my dog about once a year and he never stinks (unless he plays in the rain and gets wet) There is no dog breath either. I feed Science Diet. It is more expensive per bag, but they don't eat as much because it isn't full of fillers. Keep a close eye on him. If there is any blood get him in right away. He's had his shots so that pretty much rules out parvo. That is almost what it sounds like. When I fostered a sick puppy from the shelter I volunteer at I mixed hamburger and rice. Just rinse the grease off the burger once it's cooked with hot water. He nibbled at that and within a day was showing great improvements.

I'm sur that you also checked for worms, but pups can have a parasite called Coccidia that can cause these symtoms. It does not always show up in the fecal.
As far as vaccinations, he has already had too many. Kennel Cough is a self limiting disease, like a cold. Most otherwise healthy dogs who get it, will get over it in two weeks with no treatment at all. Unless your dog is going to a kennel or around lots of other dogs, he did not need that one.

sweets.....anytime you add anything or change a dog's diet, you run the risk of an upset tummy....which usually results in vomit or diarrhea. Dry dog food....my opinion only...is best for dogs..but hey purina sells a heckuvalot of wet food too. I would backoff the brewers yeast as well. You wanna be careful to ensure the pup doesn't become dehydrated, as this can be much more serious than some runny bum. Don't worry about his coat right now. Those things can be addressed bit by bit.....literally ounce by ounce....later in life.

Don't take this as solid advice, but brewer's yeast is generally considered a REMEDY for diarrhea. I would be more prone to suspect the food. Make sure the dog has water. Definitely go to the vet if the condition doesn't improve.

Cut out the fish. Boil the chicken. Add some cooked white rice (to firm up the poo). And get to the vet, if not today, tomorrow. Dogs can become quickly dehydrated when they have diahrreah.

The rice & boiled chicken will help alot. I use this for my dogs when they have the runs. Don't put the salmon in his food again. I give my dogs raw eggs every few weeks to help keep the coat shiny and fully of color.

you didn't say how old he is, but changing a dogs food can upset their stomachs you have to do it gradually, it also could be the type of food just does not agree with him or he ate something outside. If he is still playful he prob is ok just feel him a bland diet for a few days (such as boiled rice and hamburger) see if that helps his stomach.
