I don't think these are shin splints, as alluded to by another answerer. Shin splints affect the calves / side of the lower legs (the sides of your shin).

I'd certainly take a look at your shoes. If they are el-cheapo ones that you picked out at WalMart, you should run (literally) to a shoe specialist. I'll pay the extra $10 to the specialty stores, since they know how to fit people in the right shoes. A solid cross trainer or even a motion control runner's shoe could make a world of difference. Find a local running store and talk to them. The guys at the 'big box' sporting good stores -- at least I have found -- are not as knowledgable about their shoes.

You may also want to work on strengthening your ankles with ankle exercises. Here is a link for foot injuries that you can self-diagnose yourself with:

If exercises and shoe correction doesn't work, you may want to consider checking with a podiatrist, who may want to put you in custom orthotics.

I get those too, I cannot walk more than 2 miles, without extreme pain, I believe the name of the pain associated with those are called "shin splints", it affects the muscle called the "anterior tibialis".
I have tried building up the muscles in that area through strength and endurance for years, and it seems like it only makes it worse.
I hope you get alot of answers, if not I will ask it again.

you should get new shoes, made for walking and also make an appointment with a podiatrist (foot doctor)
