interesting question
i don't think that somebody can give you an exact answer, because nobody have ever returned from there. there are people wit near death experiences telling stories about, but that is not the same as dead.
in my opinion nothing happens, is like a computer without power or a sleep without a dream. you cannot remember what had happened when you sleep at night and you haven't dreamed anything.
lots o people say there is heaven or hell or some life after death. in my opinion there is nothing after. you just stop existing. end of the story.

Every single human being is here for a reason.
It would be foolish of someone to think that we came ..lived and died..n thats it!

This world cannot be unfair and unjust.

Once you die...
Your body will surely decay...but its not your body that keeps you alive..its the soul within....
That little voice within yourself which tells you off when you go for something bad...or which gives you peace when you acomplish something good.

Your death will call for a judicial hearing where The JUST God would chair the proceedings...

You will be rewarded for every little act of charity and piety.
You will be condemned for every single bad deed you did...

Be it that little favor of picking up a fallen stick of an old lady..or be it being disprectful to an elder when you could;ve so easily forgiven or forgone.

For those who were good and did Good for humanity and avoided sins...Their death is bound to be peaceful and smooth.
For those who lived a life of sins and evil...for them is a very painful transition.

Just one belief...There will be justice at the end of times!
We were made for a reason...and the reason will dawn at the hour of resurrection.

Friends and loved ones will go about their lives. Occasionally stopping at the graves of those they lost. Trying not to look so foolish uttering words to a headstone. Eventually the next of kin wont even realize we're there. Just another name with a birthday long forgotten.
