Buddhism contends that the more sex one has, the more he or she wants it. And therefore, people should not have it. Obviously buddhism does not think of sex as something necessary. But it is often compared with desire for food. people can not exisit without food, then what about sex?

Actually, Buddhism refers more to the attachment.

If you have attachment towards sex or food, you are likely to be in a way, concerned about it all the time, as opposed to putting the time to good use.

Hence, part of Buddhism is about training the mind to understand what is the true nature of matters.

What is practised in Buddhism is like this :

If you are a Buddhist lay follower ( meaning you are not a monk or a nun ) and if you are married, you are allowed to have sex with your spouse.

If you are a Buddhist Monk or Nun , you practise Celibacy.

If you are a Buddhist lay follower and you are not married but you have sex with someone , then , you have broken precept No.3 of the five Precepts : No Sexual misconduct .

If you have done it , you would be at the receiving end of the effects of this negative action. Of course, there is no superior being up there to pass punishment on you , but there will be negative effects and sometimes you suffer dearly for it , if you observe carefully .

So, if you are not a Buddhist Monk or Nun , but a lay follower and you are married , you are allowed to have sex with your wife.

What Buddhism is against is IMPROPER SEXUAL CONDUCT or SEXUAL MISCONDUCT .

Because casual and indiscriminate sexual relationships outside Marriage will always bring on its own set of problems, whether in the physical aspect ( a higher risk of contracting AIDS, VD, etc...) or social aspects ( danger of being found out by spouses etc)

On a deeper level, according to the Buddha , sex leads you to stay trapped in the cycle of rebirth and reincarnation. You will never be able to escape reincarnation or rebirth if you don't abstain from it .

It may sound wonderful to be in a Rebirth / reincarnation, you may think that you can explore /experience what it feels like to be different people, different races .

But , take note , you don't always get rebirth as a human being .

Buddhist teachings says that where you would be rebirth to depends on your actions in your lifetime ( karma, cause and effect ).

If you have done very evil and terrible things to other people , you can get rebirth to be an animal , say a wild rabbit ,and you will be at the mercy of a wolf or any other wild animals that eat rabbits. Or you could be hunted down by humans.

Even if you get rebirth as a human being , if you have done terrible and evil things in your past life, by this karma , you may be born into horrible countries and places ; like those born in places where there are famine , in war torn countries , in places where there are always natural disasters. You will always go hungry , always have to fear for your life. You may not be as happy and comfortable as you are in this life .

Worse still , if you have done really very terrible and evil things you will get rebirth as a suffering being in a hell.

So, in the Buddha's view , sex leads you to stay trapped in the wheel of reincarnation.

If you want to really free yourself from the cycle of rebirth and its suffering, the Buddha teaches celibacy.

Yes , people can exist without sex.

There are many living proofs of this if you look around.

i am not sure abut the Buddhist teachings on that sorry but even scientifically it would make sense
as sex releases hormones and endorphins this can be very addictive like sports
the more you get a release of these hormones and get that buzz the more you want it
so i can understand the statement although i wouldn't compare it to food except perhaps comfort foods such as chocolate etc which again gives a chemical release

you have little knowledge on Buddhism. basic thing of the Buddhism is remove all suffers. We know that having sex will give good feelings to us. But Buddhism will explain how suffering is comes. To remove all suffers we have control all bad habits. Having sex is also going suffer. (it cannot explain in few sentences).
but Buddhism is for explain the connectivity of our activity for our own suffering.

One can do with out it.The urge to do it is only to make the person reproduce or else one may or may not want to reproduce. If one wants to avoid it and use the energy for other good, useful and peaceful things as writing, cooking, painting, singing, learning, etc., one can do so and not turn violent or frustrated or behave abnormally .

Dear,
who told you this FALSE information.

Buddhism does not preach against sex.
But it condemn the addiction to it.

it says that the best way to get "NIRVANA"-the heavenly Place is
to choose the life of a YOGI or RISHI(out of all bindings)
But it also provides way to achieve nirvana through family life.

According to the first Buddha(Gautama) "SELF-KNOWLEDGE" was the first qualification required to follow him.
