Ask the Therapist

Anal Retention

I have been suffering from a disorder of "anal retention" for the past 6 years or so, where I am unable to defecate when there is anyone (other than family members) around. (for example, if I am at work and I am the only one there, I can go. If there is anyone else in the building, I can't go.) It's not that I don't want to go, it's that there is some sort of anxiety response that makes my body forget how to have a bowel movement. This has happened with urination on occasion as well. I am a 22 year old woman. Also, I have suffered all my life with an eating disorder that has taken on the form of bulemia at times, but is most consistently a binge eating disorder. Whether or not there is a connection, I'm not sure. What I would like to know is, is there a specific medical term for this disorder? And outside of personal psychiatric help, are there any other means of support and treatment? I very much look forward to your response.

The clinical term for this condition is Encopresis. Anecdotally, what you're describing is often called a "bashful kidney". This is a situation where an individual is unable to engage in elimination when in the presence of others. When the condition is ongoing, it is generally considered a secondary symptom of a diagnosable mental disorder. In your case, it is much more likely a symptom of anxiety, and without getting too Freudian on you, I would hazard a guess that its relationship to your eating disorder is some subconscious guilt about your bulimic behavior, rather then having an association with your compulsive eating.

This is a symptom, not the disorder or a dis-ease. As such, intensive psychiatric intervention is not necessary. You would be better off investigating methods of stress management, learning to meditate, possibly getting involved in a program of Yoga or even looking into hypnotherapy.

If you are in treatment, you may want to look into the issues of control as it relates to eating disorders and Encopresis as a consequence of that.

It has nothing to do with your anus. Anal retention is a term derived from Sigmund Freud. He states that when someone doesn't get past the anal stage in his psychosexual stages, they become anal retentive.

Basically, it means that you are very picky about some or most things. Like maybe you're extrememly picky about how your car, house, or yard looks (more than normal).

no its nothing to do with your *** reall. Being anally retentive means you obsess about trivial matters and place far too much importance on somethings.

For example if you can be anal about spelling, not being able to stand it if someone spells something wrong.

or anal about cleaning- picking up after people every five minutes.

I think the best medicine is to learn to let go, realise that there is a great big world out their full of some beautiful people and therefore it really doesnt matter if you wear blue and green or if you leave the toilet seat up.

life is short- grab it with your hands and enjoy!!!

compulsive, just try to realize that its OK if something is not exactly the way you want it or you need help sometimes. Its not usually serious but it doesn't hurt to ask a therapist because it can cause some major problems, it can also be a symptom of other stuff. I have found that people with this problem, with exception of those who really are sick, need to just realize they are not God and the universe does not revolve around them and their whims. Next time something is not done the way or when you want it done ask your self is this really hurting anybody? Is the earth going end over this? Can I make a comprise here?

to check if you're anal retentive - put a quarter between your buttocks then walk around with it - if the quarter doesn't fall down then you are for sure anal retentive.

the cure for it would be to stand naked in front of the mirror and imagine everyone looking a t you -when you can successfully let the quarter drop than you will be cured

Anal retentiveness is being overly obsessed with details to the point of social imcopetance.

It means you are tight fist and miserly. Sigmund Freud coined the term. He believed that if your mother forced you to go potty as a child when you were not ready to go then you would grow up to be a miser and uptight. The modern phrase is used to mean someone who easily gets upset about things.

It means you collect too many butts and don't discard them. You retain anusses.... or is the term anusi?

Actually, it's just a psychological term from Freud. It means you're rigid and inflexible, like you held onto your poop too long as a kid instead of crapping it out. Seriously, that's what the term means. Freud was screwed up.

Just loosen up
Buy a round of drinks
Smoke some herbs

Or stick a finger in it and whistle Dixie
