Doesn't matter what breed of dog it is or even what kind of animal it is. If you are caught off guard by an animal attack, the things you do are:
1. Make as much noise as possible.
2. Make yourself appear as large as possible. Stand up. Spread your legs a little. Put your arms up and out. If you're wearing a jacket, pull its sides out to make your torso look larger, like a lion's mane, a cobra's hood, or the fringe on many lizards' necks.
By the way, if you live in areas where there are such things as mountain lions (we do), many of the parks and hiking trails will have signs posted that give this exact same advice.
If the worst happens and they actually do attack:
If you are clearly outnumbered or overpowered (for example, bear attack), curl yourself into as tight of a ball as you can and try to protect your face, neck and abdomen. Try not to move or make any sound.
If you are not outnumbered or outsized, fight like hell. Go for places that will really hurt the animal - the eyes, the gonads. Shove your fist right down the animal's throat and try to pull it inside out. Go berserk. Your life is at stake now - fight for it with everything you've got.
Personal experience: My wife and I were sitting on our porch one evening when a large dog (breed unknown - half dalmation, half gorilla judging by its appearance) saw us sitting there, lowered its head and came charging across the lawn toward us. My wife's instinctive reaction was to bolt for the front door, which was too far away. My instinctive reaction was to get up, start growling, and run right at the dog. When I got about halfway there the dog suddenly realized that I was much bigger and looked a whole lot madder - and he immediately turned around and headed for the hills, whimpering. My wife thought I was crazy. I thought it was the best option I had.
One other point: the growling, barking dogs are not the ones you want to worry about the most. The animals that are by far the most dangerous are the ones that don't give you any warning. Barking, growling, etc. are signs of the animal's uncertainty - they are calling the rest of the pack to their aid. Contrary to what you see on TV, the dog (or mountain lion or bear) who is most likely to launch an attack will not be making any noise at all. You are its prey, and part of its technique in successfully hunting prey is the element of surprise, so the attack will be silent. Most people who have been attacked by a wild animal (unless they were doing something really stupid at the time) will tell you that their attacker never made a sound.

Pitbulls are not evil. Its people that raise them. If you didn't have a choice in life how would you act. If 3 came up and were going to attack me I would keep my voice low and in control be calm and move slow. The more excited you get so does the dog. Dogs are only products of their enviroments. Get over it you are still here aren't you? You always remain calm or they will eat you. Which wouldn't be a bad idea beings you down pitbulls pretty good. People like you make it messed up for animal rights. tattle tailor....

How can you be sure these dogs were going to attack you?
Were they growling, snarling, lunging?
They could have simply been frightened by you.
Pit Bulls are not a BAD breed. A lot of is it in how they are raised.
The best way to handle a situation in which you feel threatened by a dog is to avoid eye contact, speak softly, and move slowly away WITHOUT turning your back, this can be a stimulation for the dog to attack.
If need be, defend yourself with the means necessary, but make sure that the animal is actually trying to cause harm to you, and not simply defending its territory.

Pitbulls are not evil but they were bred for war, so be afraid.
I would do what you did, be loud and look big (incidentally this is the same thing to do when threatened by a bear). Don't run!
If they attack fight for your life. Let them have your arms or legs and bite their throats out.

Well if i was walking in the dark i'd have my two pit bulls with me. Actually like alot of dogs, dogs will bark and appear scary in the dark. If I came across ANY stray dog loose, i'd calmly start back tracking away from them. If they ran to attack, I'd grab what every i could to protect myself. Alway protect your neck too.

A long time ago a student told me that one of his teachers and a few other people were being stalked by a wild dog in Egypt. What they did was take off their clothes and get down on all fours like an animal. The wild dog just sniffed them and went on his merry way. I laughed at the story but maybe it works.

good strategy. you can also raise your arms, which makes you appear taller and more intimidating
if they actually attack, you need to fight back. in a life or death situation, you must do whatever is necessary to survive. gouge their eyes, pick them up and throw them down. if one gets a bite on you, stick your arm down its throat.
