However you could just keep getting trials :/,or maybe your ISP provides its free?
I use Microsoft OneCare Live (ANTI Virus + Firewall) and Microsoft Defender (anti spyware).
Very cheap, long trial before you buy, and VERY secure :D much better than Norton and McAfee I have found. Though the last edition I used of each was 2005 + 2004 respectivly.

go to this link:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5,and download the english download at the top of the page, this can be saved to your hard drive and installed when ready
on installation you will receive all updates and you will be ready to use it
if you are intrested in free anti-virus products why not try avast from http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html#3,this is as good ,if not better than avg,as it is designed for people who havent got the option of buying and continually updating a payed version, such as norton
while on the subjuct of internet security, why not try these free anti-spyware programs :
http://www.safer-networking.org/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
these can all be installed safely as they all do slightly different jobs against spyware,i run all 3 of these and windows defender(avalible from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en)and i have no problems, and no spyware!
good luck
