You can cook and eat anything, the question is: should you?
Also, alligators do not eat hippos.

Yes.
I've just returned from a trip 2 africa & was served hippo by the natives, it was cooked in large pieces (1-2 kgs) over an open fire 4 about 40-50 minutes until golden brown,it was bloody delicious & tasted like a cross between pork & beef.
I have tried to purchase some on my return to australia but no luck.
might have to smuggle some in on my next trip there.

Hippopotamus is best served with Gentleman's Relish on a cibatta bun.

Sure, why not if you can get it out of the river before the alligators. Also, you may want to think how big your oven or BBQ spit is. Cover it with bone suck-in sauce and chow down!

Cook it yes, eat it?
This is one meat that does not taste like chicken, maybe whale though.
Too much fat and too thick hide.
I'll stick to chicken.

ewww, i bet that would be tough meat.(Never had hippo) Bambi tastes better.
But if i was starving I guess I would cook it in a crock pot like a stew with carrots, onions & potatoes .
