? If they survive the front line, then they get forever detained in a Guantanamo Bay like prison, away from the natural world. Murderers, hard rapist, and child abusers predominantly..

Where do I begin? OK, military service is just that; service. It is not punishment for being an evil murderous rapist. It will sound corny to many of you that read this, but it is a privilege and honor to serve in the military with men and women who share similar goals and commitments. Felons tossed on the front lines....the only similar goal would be to go AWOL and desert.

Successful prosecution of a war or in any any form of combat relies on disciple and understanding the need to follow lawful orders given by the NCO and officer corp. How much disciple do you think the hardened criminals you suggest have?

Then as you suggest, if they survive and send them to Gitmo...forever detained. What about due process? What if they were to be released in 5 years if they were kept in jail but then re-sentenced with out due process to life in Gitmo?

And while we are considering your idea, and it will seem attractive to many I have little doubt, would you pay them for being sent to the front line? If so, why? I mean even if they survive I doubt there is much to purchase at the Gitmo prison.

I am not belittling you idea; heck I support any idea with merit that will bring our troops home as soon as their mission is accomplished. But at least in my opinion, replacing dedicated, committed and highly trained professional soldier with felons and lifetime criminals is not the answer.

Well now you get stories about normal well adjusted soldiers suposedly raping & killing innocent civilians. I don't think you really want to send people with a record of that behavior. The military is very strict about the character of the people it accepts. It requires a waiver if you have too many or just fail to report traffic tickets. Many people are turned away from military service every year that would desperately like to serve. Go on a forum like military.com & look at the nuber of people begigng for information about how to get waivers, clear a medical issue, reenlist, etc. It might be nice to relax some of those rules, but we don't need criminals & I don't want to serve with them.

If you want to creatively address the issue of recruiting, why not make it easy for foreign citizens to join. They already can after they are granted permenant residency, and are then granted citizenship while in service. During the civil war they used to set up a table at the bottom of the gangplank of ships from Ireland & force people into the Army. I say let some of the illegals here now that can pass a background, academic, & language skills test sign up if they want & grant them residency while they serve & citizenship after their four years are up.

Are you listening to yourself?? Iraq is not a prison colony. You need to remember why our guys are going to Iraq -- to make it a safer place for the innocent civilians there. Go send a bunch of hard criminals over there, they might just join up with the insurgency, right after they raped, pilfered and murdered innocent lives. You need to remember, most of them aren't too happy with the American government, so why would they try to do their best to support it, just so they can end up in Gitmo?? Much less to think that you couldn't replace every single US service member with inmates, so are you suggesting to expose our guys left there to danger from both ends? Hello, can we get some questions that make sense and show just an inkling of intelligence??

Well why not send over the white collar criminals who are so hell bent on this war and who are profiting richly from the death of innocent people? Why not send our beloved president, the weapons manufacturers, and the CEO's of oil corporations who have had a vested interest in this war from its inception to now. If anyone is going to be over there on the frontlines, I strongly feel they are by far the most appropriate candidates.

It is actually kind of weird that I seen this question posted. I was just at a family reunion and this notion was brought up. We all seemed to pretty much agree unanimously that the hardened criminals be over there fighting this battle. Makes sense to me. Let's stop the killing of our innocent soldiers!

If you send crimminals to Iraq I guarantee they won't fight. Not only that the Defense Department has a federal reserve budget too keep. So who will provide a fund site for offenders to goto Iraq? Remember that money is always a key factor, so no it wouldn't work.

I really want to congratulate you for the high humane spirit you have!!...

You want to send sick personalities to Iraq??... hm mm... I don't think it will make a difference, because American soldiers there are not any better, therefore, I think that nothing worse can ever happen to Iraqies, even if you sent "hard criminals" to Iraq..
What do criminals do??.. kill, torture, rape or steal, right??.. Well...soldiers did them all..

I think that you, yourself don't believe in this war so you want to send criminals for it. I think that a high, honorable goal requires Nobel people to serve.. not hard criminals!!...That is HIGH & HONORABLE , but for such a war, criminals fit well..

Good Idea....GO FOR IT..

because they might kill eachothers instead of the enemy... and beside u don't want to trust prisoners with guns and stuff some of them have sick minds and some of them might kill themselves. im thinking they already have that thought an opinion but the prisoners may have brought that opinion down. permantently.

So you want to give guns to criminals.

Think about it - which would be easier and safer for them. To go out and fight the enemy or to use those guns to rob you?

Because that is cruel and unusual punishment to force them to do that, but its ok to do it to young innocent men and women.

How effed up is that, huh?
