x=time driven at a particular speed

40 mph * x hours = 30 mph * (8-x) hours

40 x = 240 miles - 30x

70x = 240

x=3.428571

Distance on the way there= 40 mph * 3.428571 hours (3 hours 25 minutes 43 seconds)

Distance on the way there = 137 .14 miles

Distance on the way home = 30 mph * (8 - 3.428571) hours

Distance on the way home = 30 mph * 4.571429

Distance on the way home = 137.14 miles.

So, the answer is B) Between 120 and 140 miles

If you mean eight hours total driving time, the answer is (b). But eight hours in a day is 35mph x eight hours which would be 280 miles.
