Earn respect by acting honourably. Defend yourself against bullies by refusing to be intimidated. Stand up to them and if they threaten or even use physical violence report them. Don't believe that nonsense about not 'ratting'. What they are doing is much worse than the imagined trouble with informing the school administrartion (or even police if its that serious).

The generic answer is to earn someones respect you must first respect yourself. But to answer your question truthfully what makes you want to earn their respect, and why are you not demanding that they prove themselves to you? I am not saying that you need to be a snob but your self esteem level needs to be high. I was the zit faced kid in high school that was picked on his freshman year.I learned that summer it was not going to happen anymore,I was a good kid and a decent student. The only real talents I had was playing the trumpet and baseball. I capitalized on these talents and was the team MVP for the next three years. I was also in the jazz band and still play to this day, 18 yrs. later.
As for bullies they prey on the weak minded. They are made up of all kinds, the lead jock, the biggest kid,the delinquent and even the biggest dork. If you get back to the self esteem issue they tend to usually leave you alone. One thing to remember is never embarrass one let them do it to themselves sooner or later

Fear...Fear creates respect. Standing up for yourself, not taking any crap. If someone is bullying you the only way to get them off your back is to do something about it & I don't mean tell a teacher...
Telling on them only shows that you are a coward it will only get worse afterwards, Trust me you don't want to be a rat. U will then lose the respect of ALL your peers.
Do you really think they'll say, "way to go you told the principle got them suspended"
I saw rats get trash canned at HS, get the living crap beat out of them, plus alienated by the rest of the school.

be good. dont mess around with teachers or other students. treat people the way the diserve, good people--treat them well, bad people---stay away from them. be good, be good, and be good. that's how you earn people's respect.
defend from bullies? just dont deal with them. stay away from them. act cool, like you care and are not afraid of them, but dont mess around. if they think you're the one to make fun of--because you draw their attention---stand up. dont turn your head from them. face them.
i know it may be thrilling in the first time. but there's always a first time. this is the most important step.once you get through it, you're free. if they make fun of you, tell them you dont like it. whatever you do, dont attack first. if the next thing they do is hit you or harm you, hit them back. come on! whats the worst thing that can happen? You have black eye--so does the bulli, so what? you're a man by the time you hit him.
it's not like you're gonna die or something. teachers will come to end the fight. you're hit, but he's hit too. the next day, they'll never mess around with you again, they'll find another person to make fun of. the possible reasons are: they now respect you because they dont think you're a coward. they respect brave men. second, they dont want their a-s-s kicked anymore (because usually, they kick someone's ***, not the other way around) trust me. just be a man.

Give everyone the respect they deserve and if no one shows you some respect **** them in four years they still will be hanging around the high school while you have moved on. as far as bullies, which is so 90's steal their identity and buy sex toys on line and send it to themselves

Talk. Have friends. Spend time with your friends. To answer your second question, don't allow them to have fun with you: if they call you a name, take it lightly (it's just words after all), don't raise a fuss and appear to be offended. If they throw something at you, don't try to ignore it or they will keep at it, trying to get you to do something. Also again, don't raise a fuss and start whining or something. I would throw something back, and let them know that you aren't going to take it. Again: let them know that you aren't going to take it. You could always let a teacher know about a bully, but then that usually doesn't stop it.
