I mean, I put my elbows on the table. If anything it's comfortable, and nobody I've sat at dinner with has complained about it.

I try to eat with my elbows off the table simply because it's the polite thing to do. However, I've encountered some tables where that's virtually impossible and I just let them stay there. Some tables are at a very awkward height for me. I don't see a problem with them being on the table if that's the case. As long as the person isn't slouched all over the table and it's not a very formal dinner, it's fine.

If it's a formal dinner party, then it's imappropriate to put your elbows on the table. In terms of health, you should NOT do it because you put a lot of weight on your shoulders when you put your elbows on the table. I learned this from a doctor.

It depends on the culture. It's actually meant to not get your elbow dirty, when you eat, sometimes food fall on table. I consider putting elbow on table comfortable and show that you're being friendly/close with the person sitting with you. It's a gesture of comfort, friendlines, and trust.

Depends on where you're at but most of the time, elbows are fine on the table, as long as you're not hovering over the food and looking sloppy. Now I'm hungry!

The objection to elbows on the table is that it gives the diner's arm an awkward, crane-like appearance while bringing food to the mouth.

Yes it is really that bad. Its too easy a habit to fall into and nobody at a formal dinner is going to correct your crassness. Another thing you need to concentrate on when you eat is how you hold your silverware. Never ever get in the habit of holding your utinsils in the death grip. Good eating habits pay off even if you have absolutely nothing to say.

No, it is bad to have your elbows on the table at any time. You look like a slob and you are showing no respect for the people you are eating with. You should also not do it alone so you don't get into the habbit. Think about body language. By having your elbows on the table you have bad posture and terriable body language. You are showing to the other people there that you simiply do not care about them.
Please stop doing it.

Perhaps, too, she was remembering an actual incident rather than posing when she alleged her own childhood naughtiness in putting her elbows on thetable, “one of those darker offences against nursery etiquette (nearly on a par with drinking tea out of your saucer) to be committed recklessly, with the lurid joy of despair, when you were so deep in disgrace that nothing mattered anymore, and the whole world was darkened to your ken”

No, of course not. It's just some old throwback nonsense maybe to do with not being able to see who's speaking when there are a lot of people at the table if you lean forwards.

Yes, elbows on the table is very irritating. It's rude. You know, it would be comfortable to put my feet up on the table, but I don't do that!
