The level of the project should be at engineering level. The project should not have a database. It can be in any platform

Anything involving web services will be cool. All the major companies like ebay, google and paypal has a lot of web services that you can consume. Make up a client that can use webservice to do something.
Another cool area is AJAX. Develop a website with the rich features of AJAX.. Try this demo

How about some variety of collaborative ecosystem, the position distinct human beings can artwork at the same time on writing or arising something (technical paper, artwork etc) and chat at the same time about it and undo each and each and every others' alterations?

wot other skills u have? if u know java.. advanced java and jmf go for multimedia msgr or online radio. if u want to make some online website for ur coll regarding placements and other info tht'llbe cool to develop in .net.. or may be make some chat server or hr manager automised
