Its a figure of speech that kind of pokes fun that people who don't take risks and follow the rules die young anyway so it didn't do them any good. I know I worried about that phrase too when I was little.

The error is that 'only' the good die young.
if someone dies young, he or she is good.
That doesnt measn everyone who is good dies young.

that the mean ones go on forever..i know one who is 98 and she torments everyone their whole lives..
